I had open heart surgery back in Feb this year (3 bypass' everthing is fine now) and have decided that I need to wait a little while longer before firing up the 270 feather weight!!!

However I have a Model 7 in 243 that I just picked up and was wondering if someone could recomend some factory ammo for whitetail? I won't be shooting enough to reload,,,,,,,

Thanks for your help in advance,
Jerry

Glad to hear you are doing fine and ready to get back out there.

Nothing fancy, but have had no problems with plain ol 100gr Remington Core-Lokts.

Actually a friend of mine recomended them as well!!! Been a life style adjusting year so far.....no Marlboro's since Feb 10th!!! Been blessed to say the least...was off from work for 4 weeks only........still like to went stir crazy!! Cleaned every gun in the safe....and all the lures in the boat as well!!!

Been shooting some pistol matches last couple of months (IDPA).....some soreness for a couple days in the chest muscle...doc says no problem..go hunting!! So I am going!!! I have slipped out of a lot of the honey do list this year although that is about to run out!!!

Looking forward to just getting in the woods again!

I know a bunch of people that shoot 243's and almost all use factory loaded Remington 100g Core-Lokt's. From what I have seen, they work pretty darn good.

Jerry K - BOTH or EITHER the core lokts & Hornady interlocks will give you good service.

Over the yrs I've used both in the 243, 6mm, 270, et.al. So far I've not a bullet failure. I can't say that for some other brands of bullets. Just my experience!

Some yrs back, Midway ran a special on 270 Core lokts and I'm stocked for life. They work.

The little 80 Grain TTSX that Barnes is producing has been a good shooter in several rifles I've tried - and you would pretty well be able to take any shot you wanted - you might even find you are in no hurry to reinstate the 270 if you use them a bit.

Plus, they're a laser with less recoil than the heavier stuff.

They're handy to find since Academy is carrying them.

For affordable factory ammo, it's hard to beat the Federal Fusion stuff.

You don't need premium bullets for deer, but with all the time and money we put into hunting, I say why not? I've never had a barnes fail. The Federal 85 gr. tsx load would be my first choice, the vortx 80 gr ttsx load would be a close second, and dont forget the 100 gr nosler partition. Coreloks suck and will blow up on bone in my experience.

I have been shooting 85 Barnes TSX for the past couple years, but before then I either shot 85 Partitions or 85 Nosler SolidBase. They all seem to work well enough, but the TSX just plain lights whitetails up.

Remington has the sciroccos loaded and you are good for elk with them.

Any 100-105 worked for me for YEARS. And way on out there too... past 500 a couple of times.

Had I to worry about it now it would be the 80-85 barnes offerings and never even think of any other bullet.

That being said if recoil is a real issue, and you reload... read up on blue dot.... 18-20 grains or so and an 80 grain varmint type bullet at around 2400 or so.... will open because its thin jacket, but hold together like a bigger bullet because the load is slow... really negligible recoil.... I don't know that I have to use them for any specific reason but they are fun to shoot and 200yards wouldn't scare me if I stayed off the bones..
