I have been watching a deer for a few days. I am uncertain which gun I should use to shoot it. I inherited two guns from my uncle. My uncle Billy Bob was quite the deer hunter.

Anyways, this deer isn't too far from my stand, and I think I could get it with one shot if I was sure which gun would be best to use.

The two guns look the same, but they have different markings on the barrels. Billy Bob also left me bullets for both, and the boxes are marked like the guns.

Anyways, if you guy could help me out I would really appreciate it. If I knew which to use, I could just roll over in bed and quitely open the window. The deer eats on the rose bushes just outside the bedroom each morning.

Should I use the 6mm Remington or the 244? Thanks for your help, I am learning a bunch by reading here.

Frustrated actually. The "Is a 240" thread set me off.

The deer are starting to move a bit. So are the road hunters. As the the rut picks up it will get worse. Combine this with those who have recently moved to the country and now want to start deer hunting because deer are everywhere, and life becomes less pleasant.

A doe dropped a fawn behind the house this spring. They have been in the yard since. Yesterday, while I was out feeding the chickens, a truck stopped and the passenger took a shot behind my house. From where I was I could not see the big hunt. Yesterday evening, the doe was present. This morning I watched her cross under the fence to the neighbors CRP. I have not seen the fawn. I'm guessing I'll see the ravens in the draw in a day or so.

If you thought my post was stupid, I agree. However, I assure you that it approaches normality for some "hunters." At least those looking for easy answers and easy deer.

Rant Off.

As long as you have blue tape across the muzzle, you'll be good to go with either one.

Too much desk time and not enough field time for some!!
What are the twist rates on the 2? That should be the determining factor.

Thanks,
Bob

Just give one of the guns to me, and you won't have to choose anymore...In all seriousness, either one will work if you put the bullet in the right spot.

The .244 had a slow twist and was intended as a varmint cartridge, so the lighter bullets typically loaded in factory ammunition may not be adequate with the high impact velocity likely from shooting one eating the rose bushes.

The 6mm had a faster twist and was loaded with deer capable 100 grain bullets so that would be my recommendation.

What about the 7mm-08? Isn't that considered American?

Im thinking a small charge of C-4 shaped like a rosebud. Then you could spend several days detailing the rattle-can color and technique you chose and which fragrance you applied to the bud. (A little blue tape on the stem wouldn't hurt) A simple pulley detonator would surely work and youd be assured of a headshot saving the backstrap for me since this was my idea.

If it was marked .270 it was a factory second. They were all supposed to say .280...

Neither of those calibers is large enough for whitetail deer. All serious hunters know that if the bullet is not at least .30 caliber, it will bounce off of the thick hide of a deer. With only a .30 caliber, you are pushing the edge of the envelope, but have a fair shot at making a kill. The .244 is only suitable for field mice, while the 6mm only works on european field mice.

I like the C-4 idea, but would that be considered baiting? This ain't Texas. No deer feeding allowed here.
