What the hell?! That's what a trade association is supposed to do, not the federal government! Jackasses. President Obama�s Agriculture Department today announced that it will impose a new 15-cent charge on all fresh Christmas trees�the Christmas Tree Tax�to support a new Federal program to improve the image and marketing of Christmas trees.
In the Federal Register of November 8, 2011, Acting Administrator of Agricultural Marketing David R. Shipman announced that the Secretary of Agriculture will appoint a Christmas Tree Promotion Board. The purpose of the Board is to run a �program of promotion, research, evaluation, and information designed to strengthen the Christmas tree industry�s position in the marketplace; maintain and expend existing markets for Christmas trees; and to carry out programs, plans, and projects designed to provide maximum benefits to the Christmas tree industry� (7 CFR 1214.46(n)). And the program of �information� is to include efforts to �enhance the image of Christmas trees and the Christmas tree industry in the United States� (7 CFR 1214.10).

I don't get how the DOA can impose a fee (tax) without congress. What am I missing here?
They say everything happens for a reason.
For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

You guys haven't heard of the mandatory commodity checkoff programs run by your Department of Agriculture? Like for pork the producer kicks in 40 cents for every $100 at market (nah, it doesn't get passed along). So this big pot of cash gets allocated by the various boards for promotion, research and so forth. No chance of anything fishy going on with that system, right?

That's a shame. As most of you know, I write and manage grants for a medium size PD. Yesterday I got emails from TWO new acronyms wanting redundant information in the name of "transparency". The number of bureaucratic agencies,or subagencies, is increasing exponentially
.
