I'm about to buy my first DSLR. I am going to limit my purchase to $1K. I've mainly been looking at the Canon T3i and Nikon D5100. I've just about decided on the $949 D5100 kit here. Any reason to keep looking elsewhere? Thanks
Bob

Looks like a good buy for the price. Somewhere I received advice to stay away from glass that exceeded a multipe of 4 in zoom capacity (i.e. 50-200 mm usually OK, but 50-300 not so much).
If one is after quality, it comes mostly from buying good lenses. Should be a very good starter kit though, and most have features beyond our comprehension.

After talking to Joel, I'm considering the Sony A55. That or the Nikon D5100. Any suggestions?

Don't think their consumer-grade lenses are made in Japan. Probably China. Where America shops.

Depending on the model, many of Nikon's consumer grade lenses are made in Thailand.

I shoot Nikon, but Canon has a few rebates going on right now. Maybe Nikon will try and counter.

Joel really worked with me today on the Nikon D5100! The package will be here Friday. I can't wait. If you're not giving Joel a chance to knock your socks off, you may be paying too much. Thanks Joel!

That's Joel for ya! Post some of the photos when you get out to shoot!
Great photography is not about being in the right place at the right time, it is about putting yourself in the right place at the right time.

Oh fer sure. It's got so many auto modes that I think if I just set it on the hood of the truck, it'll automatically take pictures by itself! I've got a pretty big learning curve. I do have a fair amount of medium format film experience from years ago. Hopefully those fundamentals will translate to digital. Bob

I burned through lots of "film" this afternoon. I got a few maybe's. It was in the 20's but not much snow anywhere. Your critique welcomed. Lots of turkeys out this afternoon -

Close to sunset - Prairie, looking at the Black Hills. This one has a surprise hidden about dead center. You might have to "Reply" to see it. Bob
