I was just wondering what the recoil is like, I have an UL in 30-06 and the recoil is pretty stiff (180 grain bullets), I was thinking of getting a 257 or 270 WBY for out west. Thanks!

I have two buddies who own Weatherby Ultralight rifles chambered in .257 Wby Mag. I have fired them both and the recoil is virtually nonexistant. They do not kick much more than my 25-06, and my 25-06 is heavy.

I always tease them that they are cheating carrying those rifles, they are sure light. But, they are noticably heavier than my dad's Weatherby Ultralight chambered in 25-06.

However, both of those Ultralights in .257 Wby Mag were not very good shooters until they had a good deal of gunsmithing done on them.

Can you elaborate on what gunsmithing was required to get them shooting good?

I love mine, and it shoots great out of the box. It kicks about like a 270.

I have owned both. The 257 is very pleasant to shoot. The 270wby is a slight step up imo but not unpleasant.

I have also fired a friend's 300wby in an ultra lightweight and that is a distinct step up from the 270wby.

Quite honestly if you can handle a lightweight 30-06 I dont think you will have any problem with a 270Wby in the Ultralight weight.....

Mine in 7mm Wby is a half incher out of the box with my handloads. I've only shot 139s & 140s out if it and recoil is a bit sharp but not scary. It's such a well designed stock that it all goes to the shoulder. To me the worst part about other hard kicking rifles is getting belted in the cheek. You don't get that with a Weatherby. A 270 Wby won't be unpleasant and a 257 will be downright fun.

My experience witht the .257 (none with the .270) is they like to bark, but the bite isn't anything to be too concerned about.

Thanks guys, I have a 7mm Accumark that shoots great, just a little heavy to carry around. I also have a 300 WBY, the stainless fluted model that they only made for 2 years (7 3/4 lbs.), shoots very good, it has a brake on it which I'm trying to get away from because I generally shoot at an elk or deer after I have taken my hearing protection out or off. I've shot the 300 W/O the brake and the recoil is a bit stiff. I've wanted a 257 or 270 WBY for a long time. I've also developed a slight flinch from shooting 3 1/2" turkey loads.

In regard to the two Ultralights that I referred to as needing gunsmithing to get them to shoot, I am certain that they both had to be recrowned and bedded. I am not sure what else they may have done to them. They both shoot great now, but out of the box they were pretty lousy.

Out of the box accuracy with Wby UL's is a sometimes thing. I was determined to find one in 280 Remington and it took three to find a good one. Bought the first & traded it, bought the second & traded it, third time was the charm. It's a 3/8" shooter and I like it.

3 bulls, 5 mulie bucks, and an buck antelope (so far).
180 grain Nosler Partitions, CCI 200, Remington brass, 59.0 gr. Ramshot Hunter, 3.333 OAL, around an inch at 100 yards.

Funny story, it was mispriced at a local sports department store. They had a .270 Ultra Lightweight right next to it priced at $1175, but the -06 was $575. I actually got into an argument with the clerk. He was adamant. "The .270 is the new Ultra Lightweight. The -06 is just a Mark V."
So of course I bought it. It scanned at $1175 but the $575 price tag was still hanging from the trigger guard. Turns out $575 was less than cost but I insisted. I walked out the door with my new go-to rifle.

I have a 270 Weatherby in an Ultralight and it is a pleasure to shoot with the 130 grain bullets that I usually use.

Remember the Ultralights chambered for all magnums(except 240 Weatherby) are built on the nine lug magnum action. These magnum guns weigh at least a pound more than Ultralights built on the six lug nonmagnum action.

I had 30-06 Ultralight in 30-06 like yours, and it did seem to kick harder than my 270 weatherby. But it felt a lot lighter,I never weighed either of them but the difference was noticeable.

In rifles of equal weight, the 270 Weatherby,7mm Remington mag,and 30-06 all feel about the same to me.

Get the 270 Weatherby,I bet you'll like it just fine.

I am considering rechambering a Browning B78 from 7mm Remington Magnum into 7mm Weatherby Magnum.

Would any of you comment on the change in felt recoil?

And yes, this is off subject...

I had the 257sbgm/ulw mine was not what I would call "ultralight" or accurate.....but recoil was never a concern.

I would buy a vanguard and plop it in an edge for a net savings and a better rifle of equal weight.
