Spent a good part of the day looking for the King. First frost of the year in the morning, great scenting conditions for the Dog. Saw Woodcock, Turkey, Deer and the King. "Long live the King" A little bit of this cover. Kinda tight, but it keeps the riff-raff-hawks and owls-at bay.

Awesome Battue. I was out all day chasing those little whitetail deer. Had a very nice buck lay down 20 yards down wind of me for about 15 minutes. He never knew I was there. To bad it wasn't the one I want to put my tag on. I need to get out after some grouse soon.

MCH: Keep digging, I know you will connect if the opportunity presents.
McCake: Nice and the Lab will obviously hit the thick stuff. Beautiful Dog and excellent pic.

Very nice pics sir, very nice!!! I have yet to get out after them but have been yearning to. Alas the boys love chasing after pheasant so that has been our outings so far. Next week I WILL get after some grouse, probably alone and more likely to only have a pic or 2 of a dog on point as I cannot drop a grouse to save my life, LOL!!

Don't feel bad. This past Friday and Saturday I couldn't either and it wasn't for lack of opportunity. They all were not cake shots, but a couple most definitely were.

You gotta' love Ruffed Grouse in the dense wooded areas, but getting them with an old gun makes it even better. I would, however, put a turkey high on that game bird list and of course with an old gun...

When I hunted grouse back in upstate NYS, we called those tangles that Battue's last picture shows "heart attack factories"! (They were also Lyme Disease factories!). Not much room to swing a gun in there.... Caffeinate heavily--you're gonna need some speed!
Was Mike Armstrong. Got logged off; couldn't log back on. RE-registered my old call sign, Mesa. FNG. Again. Mike Armstrong

Nice!! what choke is in the old M-12? Modified. A little tight for Grouse, but choke only gives us inches and we usually miss by feet.

The thrill for me with Turkeys is the back and forth conversation. The shooting not so much.

An afternoon of mixed weather. Rain, sun, snow, wind. A little bit of everything. Only five birds put up, but Toby dug three of them out. There was a well written book titled, "A Rough Shooting Dog" by Charles Fergus, that is worth a read by upland bird hunters. I think Toby would fit right in with that crew. Model 59 Winchester: Not much to look at, but a shotgun Grouse should hate.

Second season bird, although you would never guess with temps in the 50's. After three hours of no flushes, four decided to go out all at once.

"Second season" opens the day after Christmas here in PA. I'll be out with the setter, Belle, up on Dutch Mt. Looking at that tangle in the pic earlier....where are you hunting that there are still leaves on the trees and shrubs?

Second season to me starts after Deer. Grouse was shot in Armstrong Co. Pic taken on the edge of my front yard in Westmoreland.

Just realized you may be referring to the tangle in the first post. If so that pic was taken on October 28th.
Not far from where yesterday's Bird was taken.
