For those who have one to look at, what does the original light-contour M600 barrel compare to, contour-wise? I've handled them, but it has been some time ago. I have a 600 Mohawk and a 660 on hand, but both have the magnum contour factory barrel.

I'm asking because I've found a source (Numerich) for a finished walnut sporter stock that looks to be set up for the lighter 600 contour and I am wondering if a standard Rem 700 sporter contour take-off might fit in there without looking too wonky. If memory serves, it seems like the original 600 contour might be a bit lighter than the standard 700 sporter which might allow me to open up the stock a bit and have a fairly uniform clearance/gap on a 700 tube. A 700 sporter in the Mohawk/660 channel looks like you could drag a cat through the barrel gap.

Thanks,

JP

I put a Numrich walnut stock on my M600 Mohawk .308 and it was fine. A very nice stock, with cut checkering. Not sure about how M700 barrels compare, though. My Mohawk is more accurate than my other .308's.

I have a M600 at home - its also a .308 but its from about 1964-65 so should be what your thinking of??

If it is, I can put a caliper on it and let you know what the specs are? I've also looked at that Numrich stock - this one I have is pretty nice, but it was notched out for a peep site and I'd like to scope it.

Anyway, JPRO let me know and I'd be happy to measure it.

It's comparable to a Remington mountain contour which is the standard on the early model seven rifles. I'm looking at my model seven from 86 with pencil mountain contour 18inch and is the same as my Remington m600 from 64. Both are 308.

I have a m600 with an 18" bbl made around 64 and a m700 made in 02 with a 24" bbl. They both measure around .620 at the muzzle but the 600 barrel is quite a bit heavier.... straiter contour. I dont have a Mt contour to measure but it suprises me to hear these other guys say it compares to their 600's because mine seems quite heavy... damn near strait taper.
