My wife and I've been looking a bit at a Land Rover tht is about 4 years old. About 70K for miles on it.

I like how it drives and how I sit in it.

Any of you guys had any dealings with this rig?

Thoughts,comments,guesses are appreciated.

Gracias

MD

Thx-it rides nice but I am more than a bit worried about having it worked on.

I am looking close at a 4-runner.

I have never owned one, but have been closely associated with several folks who have owned Land Rovers and Range Rovers over the last twelve years. These tend to be high-maintenance vehicles, especially if you actually drive them off-road. Since we live about about 15-30 miles off the pavement and 150 miles from the nearest dealer, repairs and maintenance are a big deal.

One of my friends gave his daughter his four-year-old RR (she was living in Boston and her Jeep Cherokee had been stolen). She gave it back after six months as it was costing her about $3k per month on the average to drive and maintain.

They are wonderful off-road vehicles, especially the Range Rovers. I have friend out here who buys five- to ten-year old RRs and budgets about $1,000 per month for fuel and maintenance. He enjoys the ride, and if he gets by with (say) $700-$800 per month, he is happy. When something big breaks, he sells the vehicle and buys another one.

I have other friends out here who buy five- to ten-year-old LandCrusers who do nothing but change the oil and filters, buy tires and put fuel in them, and drive them with no trouble for several years. They don't ride as nice as the LRs and RRs, but you pays your money and takes your choice.

I would be more worried about finding someone to work on a landrover than a landcruiser unless you have a local dealer. I heard they were high maintence and hard to get parts for.

I would think anyone that could work on a 4runner could do work on a landcruiser.

Land Rover Discovery of that vintage got the distinction of being reported by Consumer Reports as the most trouble prone vehicle sold in the US.

That's just odds, however. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Dutch.

Do a search and you'll find a thread where we discussed these vehicles before.

General opinions = DON'T get one.

Course you can get a Toyota Landcruiser and get one of the best offroad vehicles made. They do have a few items that need maintenance, but other then that, a trouble free killer offroad vehicle. The biggest downside is full time 4 wheel drive, so full time crappy mileage.

Just confirming the others, my 1998 5 speed 4runner has been awesome. My nephews 1996, same body style but automatic has been equally good. Getting 23 mpg and the 5 speed is great 4wheeling here in Colorado.

Mark, a friend of mine had one; became a serious money pit. If you look in the paper, many of them listed for sale are around 2-3 years old. Coincidentally, that is when the warranty runs out.
