In the 50-60s the coke-bottle shape helped reduce drag for high speeds. they did make them fast back them.

Relaxed static stability + fly by wire is pretty cool. Watch an F-16 go by you with the afterburner glowing, then it turns into a cotton ball and the next thing you see is the nose. Pretty impressive to witness.

When a column of troops under Lt. Col. Francis Smith moved into the countryside to collect arms and munitions gathered by the patriot militia, hostilities erupted at Lexington and Concord on Apr. 19, 1775.

Relief tube.

Or ailerons so you didn't have to twist the wing. Then the turn and bank indicator. Then an avalanche of good stuff.

For the old airborne aircraft carriers of the USN, the USS Akron and USS Macon.

Not exactly groundbreaking in the field of flight, but looks cool, if somewhat impractical. Especially nowadays.

In my opinion, most of the changes mentioned so far were incremental improvements. THE major change was the jet engine.

flight control computers and fly-by wire technology. Most of todays fighters could not fly without this technology.

As someone who has spent a career in aviation maintenance the Pilotless Aircraft is by far the greatest advance.

True, definitely the jet engine.

Another couple of major changes no one has mentioned are the tricycle landing gear and hydraulic boosted flight controls. Both limited the size of aircraft before they were adopted. You aren't going to muscle around a B-52 sized aircraft with manual flight controls, and a taildragger landing gear isn't going to work.

The first guy to strap a pair of canoes on bottom an airplane did us a great service IMO.
