prm Campfire Outfitter P Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 8,748	Relaxed static stability + fly by wire is pretty cool. Watch an F-16 go by you with the afterburner glowing, then it turns into a cotton ball and the next thing you see is the nose. Pretty impressive to witness.

THE major change was the jet engine. True, definitely the jet engine. Another couple of major changes no one has mentioned are the tricycle landing gear and hydraulic boosted flight controls. Both limited the size of aircraft before they were adopted. You aren't going to muscle around a B-52 sized aircraft with manual flight controls, and a taildragger landing gear isn't going to work.
