I also love my rifle I call Fat Bastard, it is a M70 with a 21" 3 weight Schneider in 338/300 WSM.

I have been shooting a 6mm Remington International since the early 60's. It's now on it's second barrel. I use it only for 200 yd position shooting (prone, sitting, kneeling and offhand).

Back when I started in these matches everyone used the 30-06's in the Springfield and M1's and I did not like the recoil. So I got a 243 M70 Varmint rifle and used that with iron sights. This was a good rig but a compromise so I got a 40X with the marksman stock and now it has a thumbhole on it.

The cartridge is a 250 Sav. with the shoulder pushed back. I have two form dies and a FL die for it. The load I have always used is a light one to keep the recoil down.

If I were to start today they use the 223 for such matches or if one wanted a 6mm then the 6mm Br. would be a modern choice.

I'm with Paul and Teeder. 338-06.

THought the 35 Whelen was great. This is better, IMHO.

.30x350 rem mag. Found a Rem 600 in .308 that had a magnum bolt in it reeeel cheap. Had it rechambered and I feed it just like .30-06(60 gr. of H4350 under a 150 gr. CT Partition to turn into a fire breathing monster. Actually I figure it gives me similar performance to a .308 with a 22/24 inch barrel but when I shoot it, that big ball of fire at the muzzle attracts a lot of attention. FUN TO SHOOT.

My favorite is a 8x62 Durham Magnum on a Czech, VZ24 action. It is extremely accurate and extremely deadly. Whacks elk and prairie dogs out to about 600 yards. Elk are easier!

I also enjoy a 6.5-06 and a 6.5WSM Improved. The 224 Durham Jet has to be my second favorite. It's built on a Sako action with a Schnieder barrel. The rig is stocked by McMillan.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but just how much "improving" can you do on this case?

7mm/06 03A3 Synthetic stock, homemade adjustable trigger. Camo from muzzle to buttplate, and top scope turret knob to the bottom of the trigger guard. Still after all these years holds a MOA at 150 and it's zero has not changed in years. Been the go to gun, when the job needs doing and it's the right tool for the job.

.280 RCBS Imp. Similar to the .280 Ackley, but with a 30 degree shoulder. Currently have two rifles chambered for it- a custom Ruger #1, and a custom pre-64 Win.

My favorite wildcat probably isn't a wildcat anymore, the 338-378 Weatherby Mag. Then it would have to be the 223AI. That's the list...since that is all I shoot. Serves me well to this point.

Hi all; Tough question to answer, currently favorite wildcats that my sons and I are shooting now are 2 rifles in .17 WBB, .20 WBB. and 3 rifles in Tactical .20. Would like to add that two of my favorite rifle/cartridges combo's right now are a .20 x .222 Mag. improved and a .20 x .221 improved. And of cousre all are varmint rifles. Also have a few big game hunting rifles that are wildcats, my youngest son is a deer hunter and hunts with a .244 Ackley improved, oldest son hunts deer and elk with a .280 Ackley improved and I hunt big game when I can with a .280 Ackley improved and a .258 x 2". I know this is a long and drawn out answer to the question, but I have built and shot wildcats for many a year, someday, maybe the question should be how many wildcats have you owned and shot in your life time???
Have a good day........... Michael

Bearstalker, you'll love that round. Make sure you have some heft in the rifle.
I have a 358-404 IMP on a converted M70 with 26" tube, that gets an easy 2900fps with a 280g A-Frame. I was looking for a low-pressure 2850, but after I got well into the 2900's I backed down to 2900 and cooled my jets. It will make a 250g anything scream for its mommy. This spring I plan on trying out a box of 270g NF's, though I can't imagine they would be any "better" really. This thing will crush anything I dare point it at this side of the big pond.
As for favorite wildcats, aside from this one, my next acquisition (or the one right after) will hopefully be a M70 in 6.5 Swede with 26" bbl. I'm devloping this silly "thing" against intermediate length actions (wasted space); otherwise it'd be the 6.5-06.

Teeder, If you blow the shoulders out to 45 degrees and straighten the case walls about .008, you increase the case capacity just slightly. The increased shoulder angle also stops the brass from stretching.

It would be the 6.5 Gibbs. I've owned several of these and have been totally delighted. My current version is on a Win Mdl 70 long action and it performs quite well. Have ben using the Hornady 129 Gr., but now will be working with the 120 Gr. Barnes Triple Shock. This along with my 6.5 WSM. Jerry1

Don't have one and never have, but I think a .22 Squirrel in a nice, med. wt. single shooter would be the bees knees in a wildcat. Cast bullets and squirrels ought to be .... well, you know.

I really don't know. This is the beginning for me with this caliber. Right now, I'm getting about 3204fps with 140 partitions and a full load of IMR 7828. Thats just slightly better than I got with a 264 mag, with a heck of a lot less recoil.
