I wonder if they give them a tune before they send that particular model out. The one's I checked were both Mil Specs, i.e., the most basic, no frills, model available.

I am leaning towards a commander now but still shopping. I have read that with carrying full size vs commander that you don't get seat or carseat interference with your holster with the commander length as far as steel vs alloy. I think steel would be cheaper, easier to shoot with the added weight but not carry as nice. I don't know how one balances in the hand compared to the other. I will keep researching and looking around.

The steel "Combat Commander" kind of defeats the purpose of the 4.25" length barrel, in my opinion, having owned both Combat and LW Commanders. I really like the LW Commander setup and haven't found it hard to manage in terms of recoil; the weight and balance are superior to the Combat Commander, at least in my hand.

Ok I'll get some flack for this, but here goes. There's a saying that goes "only Colt's go up in value". Now that certainly isn't true, but 20 years from now I'd be willing to bet that a 1911 made by Colt will be worth more than a 1911 made by any other manufacturer. In the meantime, you'll be shooting a legend. What's that worth to you?

Look at the Rock Island line they are inexpensive 1911's but they are not cheaply made by any means. I can buy 2 RIA's for what it cost to buy 1 Kimber or Springfield

and still just have 2 ria's......

You fail to mention a budget. Some customs out there for your consideration would be Les Baer, Wilson Combat, Ed Brown, Nighthawk, etc... not necessarily in that order.

My thoughts are if you are a tall man with lots of hip room, then a steel, 5 inch. If you are shorter like me, you'd probably find the shorter models carry better.
Have you shot them much ? If not, be advised they are tougher to shoot than alot of revolvers because they require a firm, proper grip, etc. But put some range time in them and it comes together.
Another point is that they handle/feel different fully loaded than when empty.
Get a steel model, with a good trigger, or plan on having somebody mith experience rework it, and easily seen sights. E

No I haven't shot one yet. I have a ruger P97 45 acp and a ruger bisly 45 colt that I shoot. My budget if for sure under a thousand but haven't quite got it down to what the max is.

I have always had a thing for the Colt 1911's. I own a Goldcup, which I know is beyond your price range, but Colt has been making them since 1911 and I think they make the best 45.
