Ok, got to get it done before I get too old.

Want to spend ten days with an outfitter in the Bob for elk and mule deer, maybe get one of those pesky wolves.

Anybody have good experience with a first class outfitter?

Lastly, [the horror] is my dream hunt maybe not enough? Should I go all in for a British Columbia hunt where the game may be better?

Thanks,

Some years ago I asked Jack Atcheson and Sons about hunting the Bob Marshal and they said the success there is too low for them to recommend any outfitters. So, I asked my cousin who had hunted and guided in the Bob Marshall for 40 years the same question. His answer pretty much mirrored Atchesons. Still want to do it sometime though.

I take it, you have never been in the "Bob"

Wish you luck.

The wolves have cleaned out the Bob from what I understand. The elk have been driven down to lower elevation private land around the Bob itself.

Used to be some fine hunting there.

Rumors aside, there's still very fine elk hunting in The Bob...

+1 Brad. Sure there are wolves in the Bob but there are more elk than alot of you guys think there are in there.

I know a gent that hunts it every year... always gets into bulls.

But he does do it on horseback... The Bob requires more work than a lot of other elk hunts in the state.

Last time we went back in the Bob, we rode in on horses and put a camp in 25 miles from the trailhead. Had elk around our tent in a big burn every night

I've always heard about the Bob being just a great overall hunting experience. Photos of the place look amazing.

I have always thought that if I decide to do a road-trip, non-resident hunt, the Bob Marshall would be at or near the very top of my list.

It saddens me to hear that it is no longer what it once was, but then I guess no place is.

My father in law got to go on a fully guided hunt in there this fall, with a really reputable outfitter. He said it was awesome being able to see that country, but he no doubt would've saw more bulls hunting on his own in a number of other general areas of Western Montana.

i would caution nonresidents who think a trip into the Bob is going to be the hunt of a lifetime. for a very few it is, but for most it is a broken dream.

It gets pounded starting with early rifle season in September all the way through end of Nov.

There are a heck of alot of outfitters and some of them run staggering numbers of hunters through the season. if you check the review sites you will see that most hunters dont see much game and big bulls are very rare.

In my opinion id consider it a touristy scenery trip and youll enjoy it if just manage your expecations for a nice bull, or any bull for that matter.

I was in the Bob in the nineties; great natural beauty. We saw mule deer and elk but more black bears than either. Eight hours in from Choteau by horseback. Great wilderness experience but mostly pre-wolf, though there were grizzlies and I'm sure some wolves around.

Can't speak to the Bob but check out Northern BC success rates on 6 pt bulls and keep in mind these are for OTC public land hunts, and you could add a stone sheep to the hunt. Check out Southern BC success rates on 6 pt bulls, OTC and public land and you could add a bighorn. This of course if you want to go the dream hunt route.
Elk won't be the 400 variety but plenty of 300+ are taken every year

Too many calibers and not enough time for the working man to hunt with them all.
