I had about 30 of these stop by to eat today. They looked just like a black bird with a real thin orange/red swoosh mark on the wing.They weren't red winged black birds. any thought? I've never seen these here before.

That is the greater swoosh bird. They are migrating now and usually fly really really fast.
As a matter of fact if a flock flies over your head you can hear them go Swoosh as they pass.

Looks like it may be a Tricolored Blackbird. They seem to be a west coast bird.

It could be an adult redwing in winter plumage. The red and orange stripes are much narrower in winter. That could be, but where they were hanging out is not your typical marshy land.

Redwings, especially in winter, can be a long ways from water. I live in a desert and we have them around here all year.

They like to nest near and in wet areas. After nesting they can be found just about anywhere.

I'm thinking immature or winter plumage red winged blackbirds as well. Also, red wing blackbirds can vary in appearance. From the link I previously posted. Different populations and subspecies of Red-winged Blackbirds vary markedly in size and proportions. An experiment was conducted that moved nestlings between populations and found that the chicks grew up to resemble their foster parents. This study indicated that much of the difference seen between populations is the result of different environments rather than different genetic makeups.

They're back, I got a better look and they are definately red winged black birds, probably from Canada heading south?

Red winged blackbirds can be found year round in the US, some migrate and others don't. Resident or short-distance migrant. Red-winged Blackbirds in northern North America winter in the southern United States, as far as about 800 miles from their breeding ranges. Southern and some western populations don�t migrate at all.
