Went to the range this morning 30 degrees and no wind. Shot a new 257 Weatherby. First 3 rounds down the barrel were 3500 fps. into 7/8" with two in the same hole, 100 gr. Hornady factory. Tried some R-25 with 100 gr. Hornadys and worked up to 75 gr. which went 3372 fps into 1 1/4". Had better luck with IMR7828. 73 gr. go me 3475 fps and 3/4" group. Did not get speed or accuracy from R-22 69 gr. got 3161 fps and 1 1/2" group that looks to be very near max for this rifle.

The 264 Winchester was shot with 129 sst and wc872 and 140 gr. core-locks. First time with this powder so I was just looking to see how it worked. I will say in my rifle it is a darn close velocity wise to US869. I got 3128 fps with 79 gr. and 129 SST Hornadys with the 872 and I had gotten 3024 with 869 and the 129 gr. IB. The 140 Core-lokts go to 3050 fps with 79 Gr. also with no pressure signs. Accuracy was not good with the core-lokts so I will work with some other 140 grainers.

All in all a good morning at the range.

Thanks for the 257 report. To date I've used Reloader 22 in a 257, and while it's OK (like MOA), I'm not overly impressed. IMR 7828 was like a laying on of the hands for a 240 Weatherby. It went from about 1 MOA with Reloader 22 down to 0.56 moa for 5 with the IMR. I'll have to give the IMR a run in my 257.

Another good powder to try in both rounds is Ramshot Magnum.

Retumbo is great in the 264 WM, would likely work good in the 257 Wby as well.

I will give Magnum a try in the 257. I have tried must powders slower than H4831 in the 264. I guess I just like working up the loads to see what the newer powders will do.

I was out at the range with my 264 this Sunday, got home in time for the 99th Grey cup. The football game went well ,our BC Lions won,we have this QB from Montana. Notice I haven't said anything about the 264,yet. My load for the 264 is 72.0 Of Magnum and 140SSTs,they mostly touch at 100 meters and go a nice 3150. I was trying some 140 VLDs,you can never have too much reach. At 73.0 grs,3050 and very honest 1.5" or worse. Odd, the slower with more powder. I had loaded 71,72, and 73.

Compare the bearing surface of the VLD to that of the SST. I have never looked at either bullet, but I might guess that the SST has the longer bearing surface.

The 264, in my experience, is very sensitive to bearing surface length. My Winchester got kind of whacky when I started working up loads for the 140 Partition. Pressures got high very quickly. Hence the original 264 Winchester bullet with two diameters.

I am thinking the 130 accubond will be a good answer to that dilemma. I hope Pac-Nor gets the rifle back to me soon so I can find out.
