Light weight actions are remington M700 and M7, and sako. These are only a little over the 2lb mark. Obviously the kimber is a light weight action - but i think they have taken too much weight from where it matters in that action (and barrel). In a short barrelled rifle you are better going with a short action cartridge. The best option is probably a sako 85 in .308. I would point out a .308 in a 22" barrel is approximately equal in weight and performance to a 30-06 in a 20" barrel. Two inches of barrel will be equal to 3 to four ounces, which is approximately the weight difference between a long and short action, and also equate to a loss of about 50 to 75 fps, which is again the difference between a 30-06 and a .308. But the 30-06 will generate greater recoil and muzzle blast.

The short action sako is only a smidge over 2lb. That is the real virtue of the sako action - it is one of the lightest and smoothest actions. Most really smooth actions are heavier - like the weatherby mark V, because they use a fatter bolt and lugs of the same diameter to make the action smoother. The sako manages to rival these for smoothness, but with a skinnier bolt and much lighter action. Takes a bit of extra machining though, to create those nicely shaped bolt raceways.

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Might as well go with the best and proven even though it's grown rather bland, Rem 700 in 308. Slimmed and trimmed to fit

Or you could just buy a Tikka T3 light in the caliber of your choice, save a whole bunch of money get MOA out of the box and go hunting.
