I have a model 700 mountain rifle, short action .260 with a walnut stock and detachable magazine. I want to keep the pretty walnut, but get a second stock to cut down for the kids.

I don't know Remington rifle designations as far as BDL, CDL...

What stock will fit the action, and fit the barrel channel well enough. I don't mind cutting it down myself and bedding it. I enjoy inletting and finishing. I don't mind a plastic stock, either.

What inexpensive stocks are out there?

DBM (detachable box magazine)
BDL (hinged floor plate)
ADL (Internal magazine)

Bell and Carlson has affordable product.

I don't have the rifle in front of me, and I don't remember what the bottom looks like. Does the DBM bottom metal interchange with the BDL stock?

You will have to buy a stock to fit your DBM action. Or convert it to one of the others.

Never had a factory DBM Remington. But I've heard that ADL and BDL mag boxes will NOT work with a DBM action. So if that's true, it will have to stay DBM and any aftermarket stock will need to accept the DBM bottom metal.

You're going to have to find a stock made for the DBM setup, your rifle can't be converted to ADL/BDL because the feed rails are attached to the magazine.

My 300's a DBM, and I love it. Never understood why so many folks scoff at the DBM's?
