Hi!
I'm a relative newbie to muzzle loading, having purchased a CVA mountain rifle in .50 cal with a twist of 1:48 10 months ago.
Im casting Lee's REAL conical bullets and I'm getting 1 1/2 " 4 shot groups at 75 meters, using 85 gr of WANO FFg (German powder) and a musket percussion cap.
Reading some books and articles, I came across 2 authors/ shooters who profess to get better accuracy when lubing the base of the bullet only, instead of the shank of the bullet. This does not make sense to me, but they swear by it.
Any comments?
I am using T/C bore butter as a bullet lube, by the way.

I would guess that you may get some pretty nasty leading in the bore, but that could be just my thoughts. I lube the whole bullet, and I am using both minnies and REAL bullets. I use a combination of lard, bees wax, and some wintergreen to make it smell purty. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> I am getting 3" groups at 100 yards (5 shot). Mine is a flinter and I am using Goex FFg - 100 grains, with a pan charge of FFFFg.

I cast for 2 different wts of the Lee REAL bullet, I don't lube either as there are no lube grooves and they are just too darn slippery afterwards.

I just shoot them dry, at the range after every 4-5 shot I run a wet water patch down brl followed by a few dry ones then keep shooting.

For my T/C Maxi ball's I use a combo of crisco and beeswax that I melt, set bullets in a shallow tin, let harden the cut out. Lube is on grooves and stays put but lubes bore well when shot.

Whatever you are willing to put up with, is exactly what you will have.

When your ship comes in. ... make sure you are willing to unload it.

PAYPAL, sucks and I will never use them again. I recommend you do the same.

Yes...the tried & true basics are that conicals are lubed up and around their sides, your own accuracy is very good, so if it was me I wouldn't waste another moment's thought on the subject.

TC's Natural Lube 1000 is all I use on anything that goes in my bores...bore lube, patch lube, and on TC Maxi-Hunters that I lube myself...outstanding accuracy, great stuff !

In the Lee reloading book, the same lube used for cast rifle/pistol bullets is recommended. Lee Alox bullet lube. Never used it myself, as I have all the casting stuff, but have yet to cast anything other than Maxi-balls for my 50 cal. It sounds easy enough though, put some in a pan and roll the bullets around in it.

Liquid alox is the only way mine will shoot them. Usually double dip them.

Hey Blammer, was it you what gave me the recipe for the lube? I have a coffee can of it and am hoping it keeps well as I only shoot about 50 loads a year.
If it was you, thanks, seems to fill the grooves real well. Might try some Alox sometime, just to see if it works though.
