What tools and process are needed to replace the extractor collar on the Mauser 98 bolt? Thanks for the help.

I can relate my ham-handed approach using a screwdriver and a lot of cussing, but I'll wait and see if someone has a slick method.

It is much easier to replace the collar using the Brownells extractor pliers. First remove the extractor, then use a screwdriver to slightly pry apart the ends of the collar. You can then spread the ends using your fingertips until the collar pops off the bolt body. To put the new one on, press it into place over the groove in the bolt body where it rides. Hold the ends together using the Brownells pliers. Start the extractor onto the collar until it will hold the collar ends in place. I usuall tap the end of the extractor on the workbench to force it back onto the collar. I then use a screwdriver or the extractor pliers (or just the edge of the bench) to pry the extractor up enough to slide it back onto the bolt, then twist the extractor to pop it into the groove on the bolt head. It is much easier to show you than to describe it.

Its not all that hard, just clumsy, trying to open up the collar while forcing it over the bolt. Having the bolt in a padded vise eliminates one problem.

You forgot the part about a few well chosen cuss words helping.

After removing the extractor, I use an small pair of old Proto snap ring pliers to gently spread open the ring just enough to allow me to pop it off. I made a set of pliers to fit the width and radius of the extractor ring to compress it while re-installing the extractor. Been using this method with outstanding success without needing to buy special tools.
