Yep, Wed or Thur. It is a MAN's KNIFE. I do like the place for your thumb. Blade just shy of 8" and it really did take half a cow for the sheath.

340mag,

I would agree that this would be a perfect factory
hunting knife due to the overall shape and very nice
non slip rubber handle, if it were not for the fact that the blade
is 4 1/2 inches long.

The blade is too long for me on deer sized game. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> I know,
I have one already! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> 3 1/2 - 3 5/8 inches long
would be better. I'd even settle for a 4 inch blade
on this particular knife. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Ernie makes some fine knives. Will do about anything you want. He's made a couple for me that I've no complaints about. My drop point is a go-getter.

I'm a fan of rubber handles on knives for very practical reasons. It's too bad that you don't like folders because Cold Steel makes a knife with a 3 1/2" flat ground, drop point blade that has a great handle; their Ultimate Hunter:

I wouldn't go anywhere without a folding knife, even when carrying a fixed blade or two. As for rubber handles, I have a Schrade LB7 that came from the Schrade Custom Shop that has Pachmayr rubber handles with finger grooves. As far as I know, it's the only Schrade knife like this in existence:

Mac,

My total dislike of folders is my own fault. Cut myself badly
twice because I don't seem to be able to use them as they
were intended. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> My cure? I just don't use them!

So the criticisms that I have would be directed towards me and not necessarily the knives! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

By the way, I consider the point of a properly hollow ground
knife to be about the same as a distal taper on a flat ground
one. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I like folders and use some that have two blades one of which is serrated. These are old now and today there are partial serrated blades. I have lots of old fixed blade knives around. They are harder to carry in a safe manner.

When getting started gutting a animal one can try either blade. It's the serrated that gets the job started much faster. Also for ripping the brisket open the serrated is far better. This is just my opinion.

I don't get all worked up over knives. I could get it done with almost anything as long as it did not break half way thru.

To each his own.

If I were going to buy a Cold Steel brand this one would work for me.

Cold Steel Recon 1 Serr Clip Point. 5 1/4" closed tactical lockblade. 4" AUS-8A stainless blade features black Teflon coating and radial thumb lug. Black Zytel handles feature Ultra Lock blade locking mechanism and a new smaller design ambidextrous black Teflon coated stainless pocket clip. Lanyard hole.

I prefer the gerber gator (folder) and the gerber freeman (fixed blade) They have worked well for me on deer, elk and antelope. tom

Steelhead,
that is some pigsticker you got there. It comes close to the old rating on a bowie knife that you had to be able to stab someone in the front and hang your hat on the blade in the back lol. tom

I like that one. It looks very similar in dimensions to the one I just picked up:

340 and 280,

I have the CS Master Hunter as well. Danged good knife. A bit large, and blocky, and not well balanced overall, but for the price and the steel, it's very good. Takes an edge, a very sharp one, and holds it well. Tough, non-slip, and one that you can work without too much concern for hurting the knife.

Two points: One, I agree that a smaller overall design would be better; smaller, slimmer blade, and a much slimmer handle. I'd also like to see them come out with some nice wood on the handle, as an option, or stag. Either would be nice.

Two: I bleach darkened the blade to keep the corrosion down. Just wiped with straight bleach, let sit over night and then brushed off the light surface rust with fine steel wool. No more corrosion, much less reflective. An interesting look; I'll try to get pics. It's not for everyone, but it did lend better to functionality (no more corrosion), and it works for me.

But, just one (at least) I want a REALLY nice set of hunting knives. The Stick/Ingram pair will most likely be them.

in the most-knife-for-the-money fixed blade category, i nominate the kershaw ken onion echo.
best $35 or so i ever spent on steel.
the blade profile is a bit strange, but man do it fit the mitt. my left hand fell in love with it on first heft.

VA,

A factory solution to your criticisms regarding the Cold Steel Master Hunter can be found in the ColdSteel line itself. Check out the CS Pendleton Hunter

http://www.coldsteel.com/penhun.html

I have one. Not a bad knife for factory. For me, hunt whitetails and prefer an even smaller blade, about 3". Also, I don't really like the plastic sheath.

MurphysLaw,

Nice design, but I LOATHE the plastic sheathes, and if I'm starting to spend near 'bout $100 on a knife, it's gonna have a NICE sheath that I like AND something other than that useful but soulless Kraton stuff on the handle.

That said, it does look to be a nice blade. Thanks,

VAnimrod,

I hate that plastic sheath so much that I have not used the CS Pendleton yet, and probably won't until I get the time to make a proper leather sheath for it.

Typically, my taste in hunting knives runs toward a smallish (3"-3.5") full tang drop point fixed blade. I prefer a small guard and hardwood or stag slabs. Also, I like palm-swells on smaller knives. Here are some of my favorites:
[Linked Image]

Makers left to right are: Swartz, Easlor, Swartz, Lovestrand, Lile and Beers.

The first knife on the left is my go-to knife for Whitetails. The palm swell fits my hand perfectly.

Those are very nice. I could see were you might favor the one on the left. Looks like it tucks in one's hand very well.

That's a great selection of knives. Just by looks and without holding them in my hand, I think I would lean towards the Swartz on the left too.
