i'm thinking about getting one in 7mm/08. any comments on this rifle from people that have shot them? its purpose will be for woods hunting with some chances at shots around the 300 yard mark. my main concern is the accuracy of the thin barrel on these rifles.

If you like Remingtons, the 7 is a fine little gun.I wouldn't worry about 300yrds, it isn't too far with the 7mm-08.

A friend of mine had one in 260. Sure, it didn't group five shots like my varmint weight 308s, but standard clay birds on the 300 yard line were toast.

My model 7 is the most accurate rifle I own.

The barrel will shoot just fine.

I have several 7-08s(they are addictive). IMO, if a fellow was not gonna hunt the great bears, it would be the only cartridge he would need for NA. I have a M7 with the 18.5" barrel that my son used to take our longest shot on a mulie. 284 long steps. Using a 140gr NP @2800fps, the mulie took one jump and was dead when he hit the ground.
I've never hunted elk with a 7-08 but if it was my only rifle, I'd load up some 160s around 2500fps and go elk hunting.

Don't expect it to be super accurrate, but it should be perfect for what you plan on doing with it.

1-1.25" at 100 and i would be happy. it going to be the model 7 or a savage.

Most of them will do that with good bullets...probably not with Corelokts.

My model 7 in 7mm-08 has been a good rifle. It never shot factory corelokts worth a darn, but it will consistently shoot 3 shots into 1-1.25" with either Federal 140 BT's or 140 Accubonds. It's short light barrel doesn't particularly help the balance or velocities (shooting factory Federals at about 2650 fps - 200fps slower than catloged). The magazine is a little fussy. I've killed a boat load of stuff with mine, I like it. It's short barrel is very handy in a stand or in the woods.

My Model 7, 7mm-08 shoots the cheap stuff into 1-1.5" without complaint. I have another Rem 700 7mm-08 that HATES corelocks.


My only complaint on the Model 7 is it tends to feel whippy/front end light to me in it's factory form. Certainly a 300 yard gun easily though.

Have had 2, still have one in 308, like everybody else it shoots ok, to me the balance is horrible. Will not own another.

I have a predator 243 and a 300 SAUM stainless/synthetic they both are accurate and a joy to carry in the woods on the 300 I have a Leupold VX 3 2.5-8x36mm and its a perfect scope and gun combination. I would like to have a 308 stainless/synthetic

My 18.5" Model 7 in 7mm-08 has become my current favorite whitetail and pig rifle.

Here in Texas, most all of our hunting is from a box blind, a pick-up, or rattling from an improvised site. Under these circumstances, a short barrel is far handier than an unweildy 22 or 24" tube. I once knocked the rear view mirror off my windshield with a 24" .25-06 whilst trying to get into action for a shot at a coyote. So, the longer barrels now stay in the safe when the quarry is Texas deer.

Now, for carrying, a well-balanced longer barrel is much preferred, but if you hunt a lot from enclosed, tight places, a short barrel is without equal.

i'm not thrilled with the heavy plastic stock and i'm saving my pennies for a replacement to help with balance.

On any given day 5 out of the 6 at my camp could be packing a Model 7- 4 - .308,s and one 7-08-- the 6th hunter always carries an older 700 Mountain-- .280 which carries like a 7 --- Web

The Seven and 700 Mountain have the exact same barrel contour, one being a couple of inches longer than the other. So if you think a Mountain Rifle can be accurate, then certainly a Seven can duplicate it.

The Sevens have always been more nicely finished than the 700 of the same time periods.

I counted five Sevens in the safe last night, and have run a few more of them that have moved on. They all shoot quite accurately, and can be given the usual Remmy tweaks to make them shoot great. Neither the 260s nor the 7-08 have liked heavy bullets all that well, but have shined with lighter numbers. The 243s and 223 can shoot everything under an inch. I've actually shot more honest 1/2" groups with an 18.5" walnut 260 running 120 Ballistic Tips than with any other rifle I own.

The balance on a wood rifle is easily fixed by drilling out the buttstock and gluing on a flip flop pad. The factory tupperware works but does not balance well and is not easily remedied. The best aftermarket is a Brown KS, in my opinion, though the Mickey Compact runs well enough. HS is now making an ultralight replacement as well at $213.

But seriously, they do...but the Model 7 20" barrels don't carry or balance worth a damn. Even with Edge stocks.
