Not sure if you guys have seen the new Stevens (Savage) bolt action centerfires that are on the market. I think it was around $270 or so. It was similar to the old model 110, but it was complete crap. The stock was the worst part, it was just plastic and flex so bad that you could squeeze it and get it to touch the barrel. And the one I looked at had a lose action screw from the factory so the action was wobbling.

These kind of peaked my interest for a cheap gun to throw around, but the thing was junk. Anyone else seen these yet? The guy at the store tried to tell me they weren't cheap, just inexpensive and that all synthetic stocks are the same anyway. LOL

If you're looking for a good, inexpensive gun, for about that price ($300), you can probably find a pre-Accutrigger Savage 110 NIB or a NIB Rem ADL.

I got a Savage 110-series (may technically be a 111) pre-Accutrigger synthetic stock .270 package gun at Walmart last December for $300 (closeout), and I think they are still carrying them or pre-Accutrigger 110s by themselves for around that price ($300-$350). Quite the bargain considering out-of-the-box (with a not-so-light trigger) it consistently shoots the Rem Reduced Recoil ammo into less than 1" 3-shot groups at 100 yds and the only other ammo I've tried (Federal factory Sierra 130 gr bullet loading) into a little more than 1" 3-shot groups (still definitely less than 1.5"). Not bad for a gun I bought to be a loaner!

Academy Sports has Rem ADLs for $339 regular price, and I think they're running them at $319 right now.

I read in one of the Wolfe publications that the Stevens stocks are supposedly made with the same molds as the old Savage 110s were, but with a cheaper material.

I don't know. That description sounds pretty fair for a $270 dollar rifle. I imagine they will harvest more than a few bucks over the next few years.

I was just looking at them because they look good from a distance. It would be ok if you went and bought a new stock. I have never seen a stock that bad on a gun.

A couple of the stores around here sell them for about $250. I've handled several and I liked them a lot. All of the stocks had a bad mold line but that would be easy to remedy. The stock was not any worse than any of the cheap tupperware stocks on the remingtons, winchesters or weatherbys. The Stevens felt very light. I'm probably going to try one out in either 7mm08 or .223. They are going to put a serious hurt on the price point for the low end remingtons and winchesters. I'm already seeing the remingtons for barely over $300.

Personally to me they don't seem all that bad and not a bad bang for the buck. But, that is just my opinion.

From what I've heard though they do shoot incredibly well.

Savage/Stevens has revised the stock recently, it's much stiffer now.

I just found a new Savage 110 in in .300 WSM for $349.00.

I just happened to be at the range when Holt Bodinson shot one of those "lousy" stevens. He shot factory 270 ammo and it was under MOA. As my horse shoer says, "beauty is as beauty does." This rifle works regardless of how it looks.

It seems to me to be competing with the cheapy remington and winning hands down.

Amen to that. I have several guns that carry some large price tags on them but that is only to satisfy my own personal requirements. Whe I worked part-time for a local sporting goods store I told many people on a budget that every gun in the store would shoot MOD (minute of deer) out to 150-200 yards as long as they did their part. Sold a lot of $480.00 Savage/Bushnell factory combo's and was brought back a lot of great pic's of kids and adults with their first deer. I think we sometimes become too wrapped up in punching little bitty holes in paper and forget what hunting is all about.

The Stevens rifles I've seen had much stiffer stocks than the Savage branded rifles. I like pretty rifles, but I like "pretty good shooting " rifles better. As stated earlier, Minute of Deer is plenty good enough for most folks, exactly the market Savage is going for, with those rifles.

I agree with MCSHunt..... we get way too wound up on making tiny little holes in paper targets sometimes. When the rubber meets the road, it's all about how the rifle performs during the rigors of the hunt. I'll take a cheap ugly shooter over an expensive masterpiece that can't hit the broad side of a barn any time.

Most of the reports that I have heard or read are that the Stevens 200 is a very accurate rifle.

Know guys with personal experince in 223, 270 and 300 mag.

Accurate or not, that gun feels like crap with its $2 stock and rough metal finish.

I have a Stevens 200 in .223, yes I agree it has mold lines, but they can be removed with some slight sanding. My metal finish is OK and I shot the gun today using factory Remington and White box Winchester ammo. 5 shots of each was covered with a quarter. Mine feels OK, the trigger could be wider to feel better, but for $250.00 to be strapped on the front of my quad or thrown in the truck when cutting wood it will do just fine. I have my gun safe queens as does everyone else, but they really do not shoot that much better.
In todays world with gas at $2.79 and everything else out of sight these guns will fill a needed niche for alot of people who want to hunt and play but just can't afford a $600.00 gun.

I have to get my 2 cents in. If the Stevens is simply a pre Accura-Trigger 10 or 110 I say buy it and a Timney trigger and go shoot some tight groups...... Essex

It's a pretty good base. I bought a Savage 11FL last year in 300 WSM. Tupperware stock, which I didn't like, so I replaced it with an MPI stock.

With either stock, I can get the Fed Premium/180 TSX loads to group in 3/4" if I do my part, and worse if I don't.

If that's junk, give me a dump truck full of them. I can buy new stocks cheap.

Geez, guess you guys should all sell your real guns and buy a Stevens then since they are so great! LOL
