I have a Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless chambered to 300 Win Mag. The box length is 3.6". Eventually I would like to rebarrel this action to a 300 RUM but feel the magazine box length is too short. I wonder how common it is to have a gunsmith lengthen this action's magazine box. I know of only one gunsmith who does this but suspect there are many others and am curious how involved of a process it is to lengthen the box. My understanding is that some material needs to be machined away from the action and then a new and longer box needs to be fitted. I would appreciate it if anyone who does this work or has had it done could comment on the success of such work. I hesitate to alter the action in a way that is permanent but if it is no big deal then may go ahead with it. The link to the one smith that I know who does this is: http://www.wyattsoutdoor.com/mag.html Check it out for more info. Thanks, Rufous.

PM me. I have done just that to several M70's. Can go out to a 4.00" length magazine. Presently putting one together, 30 - 404 Jeff at an OAL of 4.0". Also have two that are extended & opened up for the 416 Rigby case @ 4.0" OAL.

Good Hunting,

rufous,

The SAAMI maximum OAL for the 300 RUM is 3.600" which will fit within the magazine system presently available from USRAC (or Brownells). The 300 RUM was a factory offering a few years ago.

You would need to purchase the magazine and follower for the 300 RUM as well as replacing the ejector and bolt stop with the shorter versions to allow the bolt to travel further to the rear.

To insure good ejection, the ejection port should be extended to the rear.

Good luck,
Headache
