Thanks

Actually I would swap it around & use the .260 as primary rifle with the .338 as back up. Just my taste.

Thanks for the info guys. After I get my Shilen 338 Federal barrel on my action and test out some loads I will decide then which should be the primary.

Then the 243 is the equal of a 270 for bull elk?

If in Scandanavia they use the 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser cartridge on Elg (our Moose) I'd think a 260 would kill our Elk.

J.B. and Brian Pearce have hunted Scandanavia so they could both comment. I haven't seen Pearce on this Blog. But research his writings and I expect he's got something relevent.

I would't anticipate any field performance difference between a 260 Remington and 270 Winchester using the same bullet weight.

I did it with a 6.5x55 lobbing a 160 Sierra no less. Decent bull took a dirt nap in a hurry. Would probably go 140 partition if I ever get the chance to do it again.

From what I have seen, the expanding solid bullets are a game changer. With the bullets retaining all their weight, fast traveling light bullets can penetrate reliably while retaining the advantage of the big temporary wound cavity you get with a fast bullet. A friend recently shot a mule deer with a .243 85 grain tipped Barnes. When we took it apart, the internal effects were interesting: with a low center lung/heart hit, the liver was also ruptured, even though the diaphragm was intact. That's quite a shock wave! I have never seen the likes of that blood trail.

I like 140 Partitions or 140 Accubonds in the .260Rem for Elk..

Elk shoulders ain't that tough.. Seriously.

Big elk dont make it 20yds when a .260Rem hits 'em... smile

This is my son. He's 6'-4"... .260 put her in a 12' hole.. lol

I'd carry a .260Rem for elk anytime anywhere without hesitation.

[bleep] POS Ruger compacts and 140 grain slugs at a lowly 2600 fps to boot... wink

You'd be a dipschitt not to notice a few common themes at our house...

And my pre-teen offspring have guided more elk to a freezer than most who tout the ineffectiveness of their weapon of choice.

155 grain Lapua Mega is a bullet well worth looking at for the .260, excellent accuracy and weight retention with my experience, has never dissapointed me.

For some reason, I'm addicted to 6.5's (260 and 6.5X55). Go with a heavy spitzer premium bullet and you'll be fine.

Thanks guys. To the next question then since you think the 260 is just fine for elk. What about range? Should I limit myself to using the 260 out to let's say 300 yards? Or would you push it further?

Thanks in advance. LOL

Keep your impact velocities above about 1500 with cup and core type bullets and rock on.

Whatever range you would limit yourself if you were using a 270 Win.
