went to the range and shot a bunch of the leverolution hornady 325gr in a marlin 22". I had very good groups except every one in three or four shots would end up left by two inches. Also, it looked like the bullets might be tumbling. Mostly long, jagged holes. I also shot two handloads (350gr 65.5gr behind) and those holes where round. Any idea on why the sudden shots to the left or why the bullets might have been unstable? I was shooting out of a sled the range provides so I doubt it was my shooting.

I had some tumblers from my Marlin, but they were cast 405gr. I figured out it was a rough bore that was leading up so fast near the chamber it must of be rasping down those bullets until they were quite unstable.

I firelapped the thing using the Wheeler Engineering firelapping kit from Midway, and all is well.

Are you sure they were tumbling? How do you know the paper wasn't tearing?

You need something stiff behind the paper.

What distance were you shooting? I only ask, because in BPCR circles the 400 grains slugs tend to become unstable at about 400 yds. Those folks step up to 540+ gr slugs when really reaching out.

I couldn't imagine it was a lead problem because I don't shoot cast bullets. Went to the range and gun was now having accuracy issues.

Well, I decided to listen to advice and de-leaded the barrel. Went to the range today and HUGE difference. No tumble, better accuracy.

I had some tight brass and might have scraped off the jacket (=lead bullet). The micro grove barrel doesn't like that lead.

Thanks Montana, I now have my reliable gun back.

So those two tumblers happened after 5 or 6 shots right? And you were shooting cast right? And I'm going to guess this is a Marlin?

If you answered "yes" to all of the above, then you simply have a problem with bullet fit.

Glad you're happy with your shooting now, but the scenario you described doesn't make sense.

Yes, Marlin 1985 GBL.

Perhaps bullet fit was part of the issue. At any rate, after a good firelapping, bullets are flying stable, and no more heavy leading.
