Any in the hunting crowd here that uses the Nagant for an all around big game hunting rifle.

Not yet, comrade.
Now that Timney makes a trigger (with a safety!) for these, and there's products to mount a scope and get bolt clearance, it could be turned into a hunting rifle. My Polish carbine puts 3 shots in 2" at 100 yards with issue iron sights and S&B 180 gr round nose ammo. The cartridge has power between a .308 and .30-06.

Check out a Finnish M-39 rifle, well built. 300 meters with open sight and 147gr.surplus FMJ ammo, that is all I hunt with. Shot placement is key using a FMJ or SP.

funny,,you mention this,, i bought 2 m44 recently,, and have a 90/31 yr 1931 that is in perfect shape,, the m44s shoot 2-3 inches groups at 50yards , and the 90/31 shoots 2-3 inches groups at 75yards,,didnt have a place to test 100 yards todate,, and i havent touched them up to try to get better groups yet,, any of these guns as/is would be a good deer gun to 100yards ,, with some touch up work 150yards,,thats my thinking,, and no i havent used them in this capacity yet! nagants is becoming a topic around gun people !

The m38 and m44 kick a bit more than the 90/31. Since most of the 8mm ammo has dried up the nagants have taken there place for a cheap surplus rifles, ammo. The good thing about the 7.62x54 is many countries still use that round and mfg it. You may see extra surplus ammo if the mess in the middle east slows down. Here is a great site on surplus rifles. http://forums.gunboards.com/index.php

My 16 year old sure likes his. It was a "sporterized" issue rifle. I obtained a neat sporter semi inlet from Great American Stocks and installed it on the issue barreled action. Kid can regularly hit the 300 yard steel with issue sights. You could do a lot worse for an all round rifle, especially if your eyes are still good enough to use iron sights. A good replacement trigger & safety would be a major improvement.
He shoots this more than his Browning Sako Safari .243.

Nice shooting deerwhacker. What distance?
Do you mind sharing your load. I have a 91/30 that's really showing some promise.
I'm also gathering parts to build a 6.5 Vostok. The Soviets used this round to win the biathalon in the 76 winter olimpic games.
It's simply the 7.62x54R necked down to 6.5 with no other changes. A 6.5x54R

It would make a great hog gun.

only thing I didnt like about the moisin action was there is no provision to handle escaping gas in the event of a case rupture.A case failure that would easily be handled by a mauser,or most other bolt actions, could result in a nasty accident .

I have a pretty good collection of Mosin Nagants, including Finns, M38, M44 M93/30 and Some variations.
They will shoot. The cocking piece safety works well with proper technique.
Bolt and trigger function can be greatly improved in about 10 minutes. Cut 2-3 coils off the firing pin spring, they were designed to ignite Russian primers at 40 below zero. The trigger can be improved by adding thin spacers under the screw that holds the flat spring.
Accuracy can be dealt with using the same methods a Soviet or Finn armorer would have a hundred years ago. 1.relieve any binding of barrel in the full length forearm. 2. cut a strip felt 1/2" wide, soak with oil, wrap barrel under forearm as needed to "tune" barrel. 3. Shim action with oil soaked card stock or cut brass shim stock to fit. 4. duh! check the crown.
I literally bought and sold crates of these rifles with my C&R license, while building my collection. You would not believe some of the mods made to some of these rifles.
I even got one once that had a fitting on the front of the chamber for copper crush caps, a test rifle. Re armored and stuck in a crate of WWII rebuilds.
I had one that had an empty case in the chamber, the case head was pulled off.

The more I shoot surplus bolt action rifles the more I like them. Besides being relatively inexpensive they balance well, handle abuse a lot of sporters won't and are usually as accurate with iron sights as I can hold them or any other iron sighted rifle.

Well the Red Army tore the guts out off 3/4 of the German Army using the Mosin-Nagant as their infantry rifle. And the Red Army used scoped Mosin's to great effect.
So my guess is a Mosin-Nagant could make a decent deer rifle...
