How do you guys transfer $$$ during a firearms transaction? I have a rifle to post for sale but have never sold a gun online before. Any advice appreciated.

Generally the easiest is via USPS. Typically the buyer mails a check or MO to the seller, and the seller then ships the firearm to the buyer's FFL. If you, as a seller, had access to a CC machine, it could be done that way, but there are fees involved.

show pics, make a deal, stick to the deal, money is sent to you via Postal money order,or whatever method you feel comfortable with , once money is received, you ship the firearm to an FFL ( if needed)...done deal

I'm no expert for sure, but I have bought and sold several rifles on here and it always goes as said above. If selling, buyer sends you the money(usually a USPS money order) and a copy of the FFL he wishes you to ship to and you upon recieving MO ship the rifle to his FFL. Just that simple

I would add that you should provide full disclosure on any issues, and provide excellent photos of any blemishes. List everything that comes with it (box, magazines, manual...). Also good to pre-establish a 3-day, non-firing inspection/return period. Show test targets. Specify any trades in which you might be interested. Know its value, beforehand.

you can also use DISCREET Paypal (much like paying on eBay) but do not mention it is payment for a gun (they are anti-gun)

I agree with the guys above, but would add that it is a great practice to exchange photos/copies of each others drivers licenses. I have dealt with a lot of folks here, and haven't really had a negative deal with anyone. The more thourough info traded between parties the better, I feel.

It's customary for the buyer to send the money and upon receipt of that the seller sends the goods.

USPS money orders are a hassle and offer no better security. For me that means making a trip to an ATM or my credit union, then a trip to the post office where I have to wait in line behind the crazy cat lady, the non-engrish-speaking exchange student who can't quite grasp why the post office can't get him a key to his apartment's mail box, and then the inconsiderate bitch who wants the USPS to pack her box. Then I've got to spend another 5 minutes filling out the money order. A personal check only takes a maximum of about 72 hours to clear a bank now.

Lastly, there are always a few self-important dickheads on here who will tell you you are required to get a copy of the receiving FFL's license. There is no such requirement for non-FFL holders. You only need to make reasonably sure you're shipping to a licensee.

Thanks for all the info! I have a rifle that I need to get some good pics of. It may take me a week to post it up.

Thanks again,

Ron

That's the way I figured it would go on another board but the seller is a welch.
Any suggestions?

I have had great luck here as well, sent USPS MO, personal checks, billpay through my bank, and used paypal, choose the gift option, no fees and it is my way of sticking it to them for not supporting the second amendment.
If it seems too good to be true, it probably is, the better the communication, the better all are at the conclusion.
I give my email, phone numbers and address as the seller, gives the buyer a sense of security that I am not hiding anything and willing to post my address and phone if they need anything.
Let us know what you have and be open, honest, and thorough and you will have the same experiences that the good folks do here as well.

postal money orders suck for me, but i will accept them.

i absolutely will not pay with them though.

and don't ask me to send paypal as a gift. either eat the fee, split, etc. i don't like paypal's politics or policies, but they are a valuable service and i won't lie to them over a lousy 3%.

a good old personal check works great for me. if you have an online bank account, you can usually send one for free, and not even have to pay postage or lick an envelope. and they clear in less than 3 days, no matter what your bank tells you.

Personal check or a money order is how I usually send money.

Before selling (or buying) the buyer and seller need to be in agreement on what the shipper is going to require as proof of the FFL and what the FFL is going to require of the seller.

I know the laws (as pointed out by Bricktop many times on here), but many times sellers over complicate things by trying to require a 'signed copy of FFL' or 'emailed copy of FFL' or 'faxed copy of FFL'. None of that is law.

Then on the other end I've had FFL's try and tell me they can only accept from other FFL's. Have also had FFL's tell me they have to have a copy of the seller's drivers license. Again, not a law. Luckily I found a local shop that does $10 transfers and doesn't require anything that isn't law.

my favorite FFL absolutely will not give out a copy of their FFL, and i don't blame them.

get the first three and last five digits of their number, and use:

jack simple.

I actually prefer Money Gram Money Orders, issued by Mall Wart, they cash them on the spot,24/7, whereas , a lot of post offices seem to not have the cash on hand, and I always cash either kind before shipment
