Question - why is a Black Bear unusual in Michigan? It is within the bear's range.

Several years ago, one was tranquilized in Washington DC near the WW2 Memorial about 1,000 yards from the White House. It had apparently wanderd down Rock Creek (Park) due to the area drought

Not unusual in Michigan but not often seen or caught on camera this far south in the state. Open farm land, orchards and small stands of hardwoods are more the norm. Vs forsts and swamps of the Northern Lower and UP.

Ditto that. The left ear on that "bear" is way too small. Yes, it's turned so we're looking at the edge, but even so, it's still too thin.

Steve.

Pretty wide for a dog, even a really big dog.
Hard to say for certainty, but I'm leaning towards a bear.

Looks like it has a long tail, but I can't be sure. I lean toward not a bear.

I'm thinking dog. Look at the top of the rump. Looks like a dogs tail to me. And I agree with the ear looking too thin.

Camera perspective. Objects closer to the lens appear bigger. This is especially true in trail cameras. I have many photos where the part of the animal closer to the camera appears disproportionate to the rest of the animal...

... in this case, a dog.

Steve.

"Looks like a black hippo"

That makes two of us to see that.
