I have a very minty Ruger 77 RSI International in a .243 Win. It is an older model with a tang safety and the red butt pad. I'm thinking of having my gunsmith rebarrel it and change the caliber to a 7mm-08 (choice of either Pac-Nor or Douglas). The cost will be about $400.
I've been wanting a 7mm-08,better all around caliber for hunting here in New Mexico than a .243,plus I love the little Mannlicher stock rifles. Thanks ahead for any help and advice.

This is a terrible idea. You would be far ahead of the game to sell the Ruger to me, and since it is an old model, it can't be worth more than say - - -$400.00. With what you saved on the cost of a new barrel, and the $400.00 bucks from me you could go buy yourself one of several dozen bunches of 7-08 rifles - But Seriously Folks. Twere it my rifle I would have it rebored by Cliff Labounty to 7x57 and make everyone jealous who ever even sees me walking down the street with a rifle case.

Sure. Why not? It's your rifle and your money. I'm a fan of the 7mm/08 and mannlicher stocks, myself.

What's the 7-08 better at, other than elk? That said, $400 for a Pac-Nor barrel installed is a deal.
It's all in the reflexes.

I'm not arguing with you, but if a .257 Roberts can work in a short action, and a 6mm Remington can too, why can't a 7x57 work in a short action?

If i was going to re-barrel your rifle it would be to the 6.5 CM or 260 Rem
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

I'm thinking this is a pre "short action" Ruger. Red pad...tang safety....

I too think you should look at the rebore job to 7-08. Mag length on my M77R in 6mmRem is at 2.9" doing a 7x57 would have the point of the ogive deeper than the end of the case on Hornady secant Spire Points with reduced case capacity to boot.

Rebore is an option. The cost would be a lot lower, but so would the quality of the barrel.

As the bullet diameter increases, so does the bullet length. Mag box limits the COAL. 6mm Rem COAL 2.825 in 257R COAL 2.775 in 7x57mm COAL 3.071 in 8x57mm COAL 3.228 in

I would stick with a cartridge based on the .308 case--it just simplifies things. I am a fan of the 7mm-08. I don't think that you would regret rebarreling or reboring to that cartridge.

As someone mentioned it is your rifle and $ so do it if you want, and for what you want to use it for I can see your interest. The 7-08 is a nice little caliber and would be my choice of the ones yet mentioned . However being somewhat cheap by nature I would probably just trade the 243 to a 308rsi and call it good. While not rsi's my buddy and I have identical savage rifles except his is 7-08 and mine is a 308. Once you close the bolt you nor the deer/elk will ever be able to tell the difference.
