i have a Whitworth Mauser 375 H&H Magnum,Weaver steel bases and Burris Extreme rings.and have been debating over the following Leupold VX-3's:

and P.S. i am a long range hunter but this gun needs to react close also!

A huge percentage choose #1 for this purpose with #2 second choice but personally i like #3?

Maybe this can link up a few debates?

eye relief for recoil?

1. 1.5x5x20 eye relief (3.7"-4.4")
2. 1.75x6x32 "" (3.3"-4.4")
3. 2.5x8x36 "" (3.6"-4.5")

i like the eye relief of #1 and #3 but dang near bought #2 ???

i am still undecided but leaning heavily to #3? i may also post this in the big bore or dangerous game section as it certainly has to do with light gathering AND up close and personal

is that extra 25fps worth detonation?

I happen to like # 3 as well ,# 2 would be my second choice. Never liked the 20 mm objective but thats JMHO.

There is also the new Leupold VX-6 1-6x24 30mm with a constant 3.8" of eye relief and 114' FOV @ 100yds.

I had #2 on a factory Sako .375H&H, 9lb total. Never had a problem. Currently have a VXR4x12x40 on an 11lb Sako custom .375H&H. Have never had a problem. The VXR 4x12 seems (to me) to have more eye relief than #2. But that is only my perception.

Big thing for me is to mount the scope as far forward as you can and still get a good sight picture. And don't climb the stock.

according to the specs, the VXR 4-12x40 has 5" of eye relief @ 4X. that's as much as the 2.5X Ultralight.

I have the Leupold VXR 2x7 on my 375 Weatherby with the firedot reticle. I like it just fine, plenty of eye relief. I also have a 1.5-5x Leupold on my 500 Jeffery, no complaints on it either.

Burris Posi Lock is my choice by a wide margin, but not one of the options so I will not comment. <grinz>

I currently have #2 on a 30-06. Nice scope. Call me crazy but I decided I prefer my FX III 6x with HD duplex on the my .375 Ruger. 4.3 inches of eye relief and very user friendly. It work pretty good close up. I got this B&C pocket gopher at less than 25 yards with it;)

Do you have the ring spacing to properly fit #3?

Even at 12x for load development and target practice out to 500 yards, there is still plenty of eye relief. The center wires of the VXR stadia are a little thicker/wider than the normal Leupold duplex. Kinda half step in between the standard duplex and heavy duplex. Makes it easier for my old eyes to pick up, even with out the red dot.

Just my $0.02...

That IS a really nice Sable, but I happen to know he hand-raised it in a pen behind his house.

1.5-5x20 worked fine for this Zebra (400 yards), fading light.

Personal preference for sure, but I could never warm up to the 20mm and 24mm objectives.

I've ran 1.75-6x32mm, 2.5-8x36mm, and 1.5-6x42mm

These days, I prefer 1.5-6x42mm
