How much work depends a little on how lucky you are. It could screw on and headspace on your action without much trouble (if your lucky). If your not so lucky it would have a thread removed from the back, extractor slot cleaned up a little, and a reamer in to headspace. Still not a major job for a smith, but not something I would try at home. If you have a smith you work with locally, ask them about working on a Winchester. Some of the guys around here won't work on anything but Remingtons. Make sure they know it's a CRF one too.
Just my opinion, once you shoot the Wby, I don't think you would put the 338 back on. I have another 300Wby Classic Stainless that is my "go to" rifle. Shoots old school 180 gr. Barnes X's great, and haven't had anything get away from it, as long as I did my job.
