No matter what you put on, it won't detract from the fact that's a SAKO. One of the best of the best! DMc Since you've gone on a journey back in time to pick up a period rifle, you could do the same in search of your scope. 60-70's era Leupold Compact 6x36mm AO with what everyone today calls "tactical" turrets, however back in the day they were just micrometer click adjustments.

I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum. I do tend to fit in well wherever I go in person. The campfire is the most outside exposure I get. No TV, no newspaper.

I love making recommendations nobody will pay heed to anyway. Here's what I use in similar cases:
For the Sako L579, Weaver #71 (48071) front and 72 (48072) rear bases. Burris Signature Zee Rings with Posi-Align Bushings Mediums, #420520 or #420521 depending on finish desired.
Scope: Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x20, Illuminated Duplex, Matte $600. Or Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x20, Duplex, Gloss $400.
or a short fixed scope: Leupold FX-II 4x33, Duplex, Gloss $300.
I use the Leupold VX-3 1.5-5 x 20 on my classic .375 Magnum wildcat, and a very old Leupold 3x on a .45-70 custom bolt action - good classic appearance and all the magnification one needs for big game. In some cases the iron sights will appear in the sight picture if the rings are too low. The Weaver rings allow the scope to quickly removed for emergency use of the iron sights.

Do you drill and tap the receiver?

MontanaMan Are thoes Conetrols the lowest available with the 2.5-8? If they are not the lowest ,was it necessary to mount with them for bolt clearence?
Those are medium rings; the lows will get you another 1/32-1/16" or so. There is enough clearance to use the lows. I am a fairly big guy & I do not like to scrunch my neck down too far with a scope mounted too low. MM

Hey Bricktop, I think you may have a legitimate wrong-handed discrimination suit against Leupold? Or you could just turn the scope around to put the turret on the wrong side....

Cruiser1 Just a quick look at the web page.Do you like them better than Conetrols? I have not tried conetrol. Put a set of stainless s&k on my weatherby mkv. Very simple and good looking design.

Talley steel rings and bases work really well on the three Sako rifles I have them on. 2 L579s and one L61r. I have hunted quite a bit with his setup.
