After an on again off again love affair with the Hornet, I just got an email from Dan Cooper informing me that the Model 38 (Hornet length) will be available in left hand beginning in Jan of 2006.

So, now I will have to give the Hornet another chance.

Gun shot a 5 or 6 bullet group of 0.140 of a inch using H110 at 11 grains and V max also another 3 bullet at .13 of a inch all at a 100 yards , I am sold on CZ that is really the first out of the box for the gun.I shot some Sierras no good.
thats about as good as it gets.

Scott F,
I don't think I have the nerve to run a 1/4-20 tap into my chamber to remove a seperated case!

What I do is push a new copper bore brush (of the correct size) from the muzzle end and out comes the case. Bristles grab on the case mouth. No chance of scratching the chamber. Pete

Lots of good info on the hornet here. I use Lilgun and 33gr V-max and they give me great results. I also just size the neck as the chamber on my CZ 527 is a bit generous, it rally helped my groups. As it came from the factory my CZ's inletting wasn't too good, so I have full length bedded mine. The trigger was also rough, but using the instructions in the manual I got it so crisp, I never use th eset feature anymore.

I have not started on the bedding I bedded my 204 befor I shot it . My trigger is rough as well I was looking at the manual to adjust the sear as the set trigger would only fire the primer about every other time , i corrected that , I did not know they made a 33 grain V Max. I will get some., you know a lot of info has come out of this thread , thanks .

Think about it a moment. Every case separation I have had in the hornet has been just ahead of the rim, maybe 0.100 ahead of the rim. You arent really sticking a tap in the chamber you are sticking the tap inside a case with the base removed. I have done it and recommended it for years and there has not been one mishap nor has there been a failure to immediately remove the case.

If the brush works for you, great, but, if you come across a case the brush wont remove try a tap.

The best way to eliminate the problem is to neck size only and not separate cases. I cant remember separating a case since I got rid of my full length die and its evil expander button.

Hi Scott
I was reading about a way a guy loads for accuracy on the web. It caught my eye about his use of the Lyman M die. I was thinking about trying to do this set up with the Hornet.
1.De prime the case using a universal decapping die,
2. Use a Redding body die to resize. No bullet run out problems from the expander button.
3. Use the Lyman M die to open up the case mouth to except the bullet.
4. Use a Forrester seating die to seat the bullet.

This is a simple overview and more details were in the process. It sounded like I could apply this technic to the Hornet. This is the link to the article. It has much more detail then what I gave but the main point was the use of the Lyman M die. Let me know what you think about the article and if you think it might work for the hornet.

Hand dies are the best but I have used Redding bushing neck dies and they work as well. I NEVER resize the body of a hornet.

To find the proper bushing for a die measure across the neck of a loaded round and subtract .003". Use a micrometer for this not a caliper.

Can anyone advise the case overall length on their favorite loads?
I believe the cartridge is listed as 1.8" C.O.L., but that is too long for my CZ 527 magazine for feeding purposes.
One reloading book lists 1.723" and Hornady loads their 40g V-Max to 1.71."

I settled for 1.718" until I hear a more deifinitive C.O.L. Can't wait to shoot it this Monday!

I'm new to handloading the 22 Hornet (but not to handloading). It seems at 1.718 or 1.8" that the 40g bulet is way too deep up to the ogive on the bullet. If anyone can set me straight on this I'd appreciate it!

The max case length is 1.403",but it sounds like you are referring to the overall cartridge length.I load the 40gr v-max to 1.840" for my Anschutz 54.I shoot them single shot at the range at that length,or simply shorten the nylon tips until the COL is 1.740", and they fit the magazine just fine.Shortening the nylon tip has no effect on accuracy in my rifle.

I reload my CZ hornet way longer than you can fit in the magazine. I just use it as a single shot. I load long because that is where I found the sweet spot for my rifle. If you can load so you can put five rounds in a group under a quarter of an inch you don't need a magazine. grin

BTW I took my CZ out to K-hornet.

One other tip, neck size only and just do about a quarter of an inch of the neck. Case life goes off the charts.

What's funny is why jetblueman decided to revive a FIVE-YEAR-OLD thread.

It's not as if nobody else has talked about the Hornet in all that time. Geez ...

I was shocked to see this here. That was a long time ago but I stand by what I said. Still have the CZ and my home made hand dies. grin

Here is my confession. I have never owned, fired, or seen even in pictures a 22 hornet. I was not a machinist and have never swaged a bullet or made dies of any sort. I only picked a CZ for my dream rifle because it is the only brand I can spell.

In fact, I am not a hunter of shooter of any kind. I was born without trigger fingers on any hand. I don't even have second toes on either foot. Both of my eyes are missing.

There big guy. That make you feel better. We sure would not want anyone else on earth knowing or doing something.
