Hey everyone. I have a .338WM that I'm trying to setup w/ a new scope. I have some Leupold Dual Dovetail rings laying here that I could use but I'd have to buy some DD bases. The other thing I was thinking about is getting my hands on some Talley Lightweight Aluminum *1-Piece* mounts.

What would you guys use for a .338WM? Will the aluminum mounts hold up? Just go w/ DD & be done w/ it? Something else?

I'm open to suggestions. I want something that I can mount & be done w/ it.

I doubt there's a stronger mount than the Talley LTWT's. Not all aluminum is the same and they ain't makin them outa pop cans.

I use the standard talley qr rings and bases and they are excellent. also, it's easy to remove the scope for cleaning or travel of just swapping onto another rifle.

fwiw,
It's hard to best a Dual Dovetail Mount System for being stout. As with most hunting mounts you don't have a recoil shoulder so going to 8-40s would give you a bit of extra insurance on shear strength. Though I doubt you would need it... No flys on the Talley Lightweights either, however, I'd have to give the nod to Dual Dovetails for being bombproof. The only mount I've seen I like better are Darcy Echols two piece ring/bases he makes for his Legends. It's largely like a Talley Lightweight, however, it has three heavy base screws on both bases AND is made of steel. Not to mention they are fitted to the rifle for a 1 to 1 fit...

Regards, Matt.

Well, I went out and picked up Leupold 50159 DD bases today. These things suck. The rear one is fine but the front one extends over the open bolt area & will snack ejecting cases I believe. Beside that, it looks like crap.

Why don't they make one that sits on the mounting area w/o hanging out over like a cantilever? Ugh.

Seems the "A bolt" only comes with reversable front bases! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> Yeah, you are right. They suck! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

If the front hole spacing isn't too tight, Dennis Olson or
Mark Penrod can make one for you. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Don't know what kind of gun you have, but get a set of weaver bases and use Leupold PRW rings 54167 med height they will do jobvery very strong rings. If you want rings that go right on like Talleys but stronger than Talleys go to; wwwrwhart.com they make a great pair in 1" and 30mm about $70.00 not cheap but top quality and very light, I have a set for my 7mm wsm I have a never used set of Leupold PRW in 30mm I went with Harts because of weight.

If you're not trying to go strictly light weight (and I can't imagine a 1/2 ounce or so making that much of a difference) just go with the standard "Talley" QR's. Talley is also back in production of the peep sight for their QR basses. Took delivery on two sets just last week. The rear base is modified to allow the peep to be installed on the rear base if the scope is damaged. Helps to order the rear base pre-modified when you make the purchase of the rings and bases. Other wise you have to send the rear base back to them to have the rear lip milled off. It's a great set up!

Robert, my favorite way to get a scope low while being moderately "QD" and hell for stout is Leupold All-steel Weaver bases and Burris Zee's. The Zee's will allow mounting lower than everything else mentioned (including the DD's) and are secured with 8x40 Torx. I JB Weld the bases to the rifle.

Here's a look:
