1999 F150 125,000 miles, 5.4 auto trans

Drove to my parents yesterday about a 200 mile trip, notice 2 small spots of oil underneath. I first though maybe the filter was loose as it looked like the oil was running down the plastic channel in place to drain the filter oil.

Today I had a chance to look and it looks as if the leak is on the driver side and I found some oil on possibly a bracket or mount. The oil is fresh and I did not have a leak prior to leaving home.

I know the info is vague and weather giving I'll jack the truck for a better look.
Any idea what to look for? I did check the filter and it feels tight, though I couldn't get a real good grip on it.

When was the last time you changed the oil and filter?

If the filter change is real recent, how tight did you get it? Too loose and it leaks. Too tight and you can distort the gasket and get a leak.

Valve cover bolt tightness should be checked. They vibrate loose with the heat changes and finally will start a very slow leak like that.

Eh, I'm embarrassed to say it but, I took it to a 10 minute oil change place as the weather was crappy and the oil needed changed. blush

I'll check the filter again in the morning. Oil change was about 3 weeks ago, think it could cause a problem now?
Thanks guys!

I'd check to see if the old gasket stayed behind too.

I thought about that too but double gasket usually blows out, pukes the oil terribly and you'd usually see the truck bleeding oil on initial start up after the oil change.

Something clever here.

Not always and if the oil is coming from that area than that's more than likely the problem.

If they didn't get it tight enough it could have loosened over those 3 weeks and allow the oil to seep out.

Not sure on Fords but had a Chevy that had a bad gasket on the oil filter housing bracket. Oil began to drip from that area as you describe.

Truck died on me this afternoon! Totally irrelevant situation!

Leaving my parents and got about an hour away and I suddenly lost power. Got the truck to the shoulder of the highway, put it in park and it quit. I tried to start it and it just shook, sputtered and died each time. So I had to have it towed to a garage. I'm sitting in WV and my truck is in Bolivar Ohio.

Acted the same way today as when my fuel pump went out 2 years ago. Guy from the garage says he would look at it today and to call Friday for a more definite answer.

I wonder what this will cost me! eek

He did say he'd look for the oil leak though! grin

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem.

On the oil leak, it's a 13 year old domestic truck with 125K miles, I'd be very, very suprised if it didn't have some small oil leaks. If it's something minor I'd just keep an eye on the oil level, that's why they give you a dipstick. You'll drive yourself crazy chasing minor leaks on a truck that old.

Yeah your right, I get worked up on these things. I did check the oil level today and it appears fine.

Truck runs great with a new fuel pump! grin
