Ordering McM edge without pad as the 1" pad is too heavy and I don't like the looks of a 1/2" pad. I never could find a flip-flop to use. HELP! I would pay someone to install...

If you grind the bakelite backer off a Decelerator you lose about 30%. 6.5oz vs 4.7oz

Thanks Karnis, I had heard that but hoping for a slightly easier/cleaner solution but 2oz for a little mess isn't bad....

Anyone else? I wonder what Lone Wolf or others use?

IIRC Lone Wolf was using a 752 Old English but may have that screwed up. I don't think they are making individual custom stocks any longer--turned down my mauser request.
The 5/8" 100 Straight Terminator is 3.5oz.

I just worked over a Ruger UL stock and found that the factory black recoil pad weighs 3.2 oz. I drilled a number of holes in the bakelite backer and dropped it a hair.

I've got a couple of pads on rifles made from Brownell's so called 1/2 inch foam pads. Be warned they are really only 3/8ths of an inch. Glued together, they make a 1 oz., 1 inch recoil pad. Best way to improve the balance and save even more weight on a light rifle I know of. Their drawbacks are two. They need to be glued on and they can be worn down with heavy use. Mine are still doing fine however. E

someone on here used to post about a lighter material he made pads out of. i found some black foam rubber at work that is made as refrigeration insulation it makes a great light pad. only down side is if you leave it in a gun safe that stores guns vertically the pad will flatten [compress] in a day or two. it will expand again. i've got an old treadlock safe that stores guns horizontally so it works for me.

I learned from Free Miner and install them on all my builds (they're all lightweights). Fresh Plastic welder is the only thing I use and holds them well.

Dave - My most recent lonewolf XLII came with a kick-EZ pad. I received it this past spring. My older LW stock came with a pachmyar.

Thanks guys. I have used 5 minute epoxy to glue several pads and worked great. I'll look around for material otherwise the Brownells stuff sounds good.

Couldn't ever find a flip-flop suitable but maybe I didn't look hard enough.
Just know looked in my 2-3 yr old Brownells catalog and don't see foam listed.
Guess I have 3-4 months to figure it out.....

daveh; I'll begin with a hope that you had a Merry Christmas. Awhile ago now I did a project where I put a 98 on a diet to see how light I could actually make one. Here is a link to the details. http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/3660460/2Anyway, the last part of it deals with the recoil pad and the short version is that I got a few blanks from Corlane Sports up in Dawson Creek. For the life of me I can't recall the name of the gunsmith up there, but he was extremely helpful. http://www.rockymountainrifles.com/faq.phpI used plain old glass bedding epoxy to glue the pad on my Wildcat Composites stock, but others use 5 minute epoxy with success so I've been able to understand. As noted, the pad from Corlanes bumped an even 3 oz off the rifle as compared to a Decelerator. I should note that the Decelerator is my "go to" pad these days for anyone who I put a recoil pad on for - unless they are going for extreme lightweight jobs - well or tilting at a windmill like I was trying to see how light a 98 can be! Hopefully that was some use to you. Good luck whichever way you decide and good luck with your project. All the best to you in 2012. Regards, Dwayne

The 5/8" 100 Straight Terminator at 3.5oz seems to make the most sense as I can't locate something better...

Go to your local shoe repair shop and buy some of the crepe rubber sole material. Problem solved. About 1 oz

I weighed the last 2 decelerators I used on Wildcat stocks. The 0.8" went on a M7 pattern the 1" went on a winchester featherweight pattern. - 1" medium decelerator weighed 4.65oz as it came. After I thinned the plastic it weighed 4.1oz. Pop the metal insert out and it weighed 3.4oz. After fitting it to the stock it weighed 2.9oz. -0.8" weighed 4.2oz, after thinning 3.5oz. The insert stayed in on this one, but after fitting it weighed 2.8oz.
