.50 Encore ML .454 Casull - Encore Handgun .35 Whelen - Custom Sako .35 Rem - Rem Model 14 .300 Wby - 700 AS .270 - Tikka T3 .243 - Ruger M77 (Daughter's gun) .22 - Marlin Semi-auto .17 Fireball - 700 CDL Anniv .17 HMR - CZ 453 Varmint
Everything bigger than the 22 is for Whitetails at home. I'm working on planning for on a trip or two out west where I'd like to go after a wide range of game. Elk, Mule deer, Pronghorn or maybe even a sheep. The Whelen would be my first choice for all of those off the top of my head, but many of the others would work, too.
I'm toying with the idea of selling maybe one or more of the lesser used guns and adding a real nice or possible custom gun in .223 or maybe something you guys suggest that would be useful for targets, possibly something out west just plain fun. Trying to create the perfect lineup.
What do you guys think?

You can't go wrong with a .223 Rem. I've used mine for everything from crows to deer. Get a fast twist so you can use a wide range of bullets. Mine is a 1 in 9 twist. There is a great selection of bullets suitable for everything up to deer sized game - with proper bullet placement.

I can't believe it!!! No 26 caliber in your lineup? You need to go buy a 260Rem or 6.5x55 this week and solve that glaring problem. No selfrepecting rifle looney can be without a 26 something in the collection.

No 7x57 or .25-06. 7mm-08 or .257 Wby will work too.
And why in hades would you take a .35 Whelen out for antelope and leave the .243 and .270 at home? If you're doing one rifle for a multi-species Western hunt, I'd pick the .270 or .300 Wby over the Whelen.
I do notice a "no Winchester or Kimber gap" you need a Featherweight 70, or 84M/L Classic Select.

.30-30 Marlin .223 As to the other long guns, get a 7mm RM and you won't need them...

A hot centerfire .22 and .25 are glaring deficiencies!

300 Wby would be a good choice for the trip out west for all the critters you listed. The 270 could go as your back up. Some states out west wont let you use a centerfire .22 for big game. Just something to check into before you drop some coin on a 223 to take out there.

What do you guys think? .17 Fireball pretty useful fun gun already, but add a used Sako AII? 22-250, Kimber? 25/06, Savage 99 custom in .338 Federal. One more possible, and 325 WSM or 340 Wthby for cross canyon big stuff.

You need a 7-9 twist .223 or a 7 mag of somekind. Then you can sell everything else off.
If I were smart enough, which apparently I'm not

Personally with the 22LR, 243, 270 and 300 wby. .54ml you have North America in the bag. Don't see much real need for anything else other than just something to play with. Unless you have that covered too I would be thinking a nice shotgun.

Not the way I would have word it ... but ... ditto Hey, that's why I'm asking. The .35 is a custom that I like to use whenever I can just because of the build quality. But its obviously not perfect and I'm not sure anything I have, is. I'd seriously consider even consolidating if there were a handful of guns that were the perfect 'set'. I already have more than a guy needs.

awww got it. Then maybe something in a .26 caliber and a .338 not because you would really need them (those wouldn't really fill any real holes) but I like the ballistics of those bullets.
Between the 243 and 270 you've got the 223 and .25 - .26 calibers covered. But a 338 Norma shooting a 300gr Berger Hybrid, now that's a pretty nice boomer.

Unless you expect to run into an elephant or a cape buffalo while hunting elk, I think you pretty well have it covered. But just in case you do, you might want to add a .375 H&H to your collection.

The .270 would do for all of those, as would the .300 Wby. I would be inclined to go with the .270.

I keep on thinking i need a .223, but keep on coming back to the same conclusion. It is a very marginal gun even on small deer, and i'd rather a 17 or 20 cal for varmints.
Having a collection of guns isn't like having a collection of golf clubs. You don't need one of ever size. You just need guns that are well suited to the hunting you actaully do. And for most of us, i suspect most of our hunting in reality varies little. Given we can only hunt with a single rifle at a time, i think what most of us would be best off with would look a little like this:
a varmint gun - probably a 17 or 20 cal at the moment, a .223 if you shoot a lot a mountain rifle - a lightweight .270 sounds great an elk rifle - 300 WM sounds great out west a woods rifle - 35 Rem sounds great a big game rifle - if you actually do any.
