Picked up a Rem Desert Recon VTR in 308 for about $250. Was gonna just use the action for a build as i already have a good shooting 308. Had a HS stock around so I put it on it and it shoots lights out now. Shot a 6 shot sub half inch group yesterday with it with hornady TAP 168's.
At the end of the shooting yesterday it wouldn't feed out of the mag box at all. I went and hunted anyway and checked it out when I got home.
Mag box is canted in the stock. Seems to be main reason for feeding prob. I don't wanna take the stock off again because of how good it is shooting right now.
Should I be able to get the mag box out without taking the stock off??? I've tried but it's jammed up in there pretty bad. Looks like it should come out but for the life of me I can't get it to slide out without putting more pressure on it than I think is wise.
Any advise??

They don't come out of the top.

BTW, how did you snag a VTR for $250?

Was mispriced at a local store. They left a $250 price tag on it???! I asked if that was the right price several times and they said yes so I bought it.
If it comes out of the top I'll have to take the scope and rail off. May be easier to take the action out of the stock than mess with all that. I can torque it back properly if I take the stock off just don't wanna waste any more factory ammo getting it sighted back in. I'm gonna fiddle with it a little more and see if I can't straighten it out without taking my rifle apart.

Oh well, now I accidentally stripped the rear action screw! Guess I can drill and tap and get it out and get a new one??? one little problem that has now gone to a major problem and a trip to the hardware store. CR*P!!!!!
Used the same little allen head tip and FAT wrench i used to torque it the first time and it just rounded the edges right off the action screw.
The mag box is now stuck in a position where I can't even shoot it single shot now. Blocking the bolt.
Was gonna shoot and get some DOPE for it out to 400 today too. Now that's out the window. Gonna work on 223's and ARs now.

Thanks

I can't follow how that would happen. Are you talking about the follower or the mag box? Either way, take it out of the stock and re-assemble it correctly.

Got it!!!
Didn't strip my action screw at all. Thought it was but had the wring size driver. Took action out of stock and fixed it. Torqued it back to the setting I had before and gonna go shoot now to see if it is close to zero or re-zero and hunt her again this afternoon as a backup gun for my daughter shooting her colt AR.
Seems like the mag box just got loose in between the bottom and top some kinda way and wasn't letting the follower move smoothly. Will probably end up with a detachable mag setup on this gun anyway, but she is running fine now.
