I have a Ruger Frontier in 358 Win. That said, I never intend to mount anything in the scout style setup on this rifle.
The barrel is a heavier profile to allow for the drilling & tapping for the scout mount setup but for my use it's heavier than I want. I'm thinking about either getting the barrel fluted or turned down. By my calculations I should be able to lose nearly a pound by doing this which would put the rifle about the same weight as the Ruger compacts (which have the thinner profile barrel). Am I crazy for wanting to do this? Any advice why I should or shouldn't do it?
Thanks smile

Recoil and expense would be the only reasons for me.I would probably sell or trade it for something more in line with my needs. An altered rifle may be harder to sell later on.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, recoil will increase but it's a non issue for me and this rifle, not worried about any increases there.
I like everything about this little rifle except the fact that it has a thicker profile barrel on it. It's 90% perfect for me the way it is, just looking to get the other 10%.
Resale value is a non issue for me as well. I don't sell guns, only buy more wink That said, I don't think a professionally done job would degrade the value significantly anyway.
As for expense, that goes without saying smile
I have concerns that removing material from the barrel could somehow ruin or degrade the barrel or accuracy. Hearing from anyone that has done something like this to a factory Ruger barrel already and the results they got would be great smile

I am thinking you would not get the pound of which you are looking. That is a lot of weight to trim off a barrel. The profile is not just for the mount, but also that big hole. I believe it has a laminate stock, no? Changing that would give you immediate weight relief without the hassle. Should not be too hard to find several from which to choose. Can't hurt to try, and it is easily retractable.

I think, therefore I am, conservative.

Hey thanks for the reply smile
A full pound may be a bit optimistic but I think a half pound would be do-able. Half pound on the barrel and more weight savings with a stock should get this rifle down to 6 pounds or less easily, which is where I'd like it to be. I'm not satisfied with a 16 inch tubed rifle coming in at 6.75 pounds unscoped.
