Many years ago I was squirrel hunting with my cousins. One of those cousins was using a new high power .177 caliber pellet rifle.

While sitting beside a Hickory tree, a young doe walked up to within 10 yards without noticing him. This particular cousin didn't interpret the season dates too stricktly (it was ONLY a week until deer season opened anyway), so he placed a .177 pellet in the deer's brain.....and dead deer!

Sooooo....by Campfire logic, "If you put the pellet in the right place, dead deer".....this MUST mean that a .177 caliber pellet rifle is a great deer rifle just like the .223 is.

Can't very well argue with your own logic can you???

I think those were 9mm pellets IIRC.

Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a hunting license and that's pretty close.

I prefer to stalk them butt naked through the mesquite and prickly pear, and kill them with my bare hands.

Problem is that when you turn blue from the cold, you'll scare off all the deer.

.22 Short shot shells?

A .223 is not legal in CO and even if it was I doubt I'd choose one.

But a .177 pellet in the brain does make 2 points:

1. Placement is primary.

2. Even with good placement, other factors can make a big difference. A .177 pellet to the ribs cannot be expected to generate the same results as a centerfire anything.
