Ain't anything out there that will beat a 6PPC out to 200 yards. The bullets we shoot in short range BR have a low BC, not sure how well they would do against the wind at 300.

Pick your bullet for the distances you are shooting most and just get the twist right. I like the 6BR for the fact it has a bit more case capacity for heavier pills to help fight the wind, also it has the standard .473" bolt face. For 300 yds I`d go with a 1 in 12" twist and shoot 80 grain Fowlers. Heck of a combination.

They use the 6ppc all the way out to 300yd for match shooting so I assume it would do the job you want. I get alittle better velocity with the 6ppc over my 6br I also shoot a 6br talldog and it get pretty close to 6ppc velocity and it shoot alittle better than the 6br all three rifles have tight necks and Hart 1/14 twist barrels. I don't own a non tight neck ppc or br so cann't say how they would shoot. Well good luck.

6mmBR is very nice at 300 yards and out. Plus, if you don't like to mess around with neck prep, Lapua makes very good factory brass for .271" (I think) and larger factory chambers. Check out:

I regularly shoot benchrest matches at 300 yds. We have over the years had a few 6 BR's that did well in our matches. But, as a general rule, the 6ppc still rules the roost at 300 yds. Beyond that the BR starts coming into it's own.

Not to down the 6mms, they're great cartridges, but if possible, i'd step up to 7mms because of their better BC. If that's not an option, I own both barrels for my contender. I never shoot the PPC because I feel that the BR is a much better round. Go with a 1 in 12" twist, and like said before go with 80 gr. bullets. I've had the best luck with H4895, usually 32.5 grains. Good luck.

[You will not hear this very often... (truth from the underdog owner)]
Years ago, I got a lathe and learned gunsmithing. I wanted to branch into benchrest (altho I had been warned NEVER to) and did some research. Wisdom of the day was PPC. But I am one to always bet on the underdog and tooled for 6BR Norma. Well, I have to tell you after 3 Krieger 6mm barrels, that with the 65-70 grain pills put your money on PPC. Now if, you talking long ranges with the 6mm use the BR and 105-115 grain pills in a twist like 1x8 or 1x7.
Remember, this is from the owner/experimenter of several 6BR's... honest men have to call it like it is! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

what's the most accurrate load in many different 6PPC rifles you have seen? There have to be a couple loads that shoot pretty well in most rifles. I'm asking because I have one of the single shot Sako BR rifles in 6PPC that just will not shoot, at least it won't shoot anything I've put thru it under an inch. I've only tried two bullets, a 70 gr Ballistic Tip and a 75 gr VMax with H322, H335 and Varget powder in Sako cases. Now, I know I have to get some 220 Russian cases, neck them up and neck-turn them...but there might be an easier way to get to a half inch gun without all the work...?

If you don't have a tight neck chamber you might want to try Norma 6PPC brass. Comes ready to shoot unless your have your heart set on neck turning. Most benchrest shooters don't use it because it's softer that Lapua, with the hot loads that some shoot the brass goes to heck really quick. All of the PPC's I've seen were in custom rifles, there's some difference in the chambers of the rifles, especially in the throat area. A generic load would be a 65gr- 68gr custom benchrest bullet pushed with a healthy dose of either H322 or VN 133. Start with the bullets jammed into the lands, back em off in .005" incraments till you find what your rifle likes.

Out to 300 yds. the PPC holds all the records for the smallest group and aggregrate of groups. Nothing is close to the 6ppc. The 6br will not start to compete until after 300 yds. Don't take my word, check the records. Butch

Could be because 99% of the short range guys shoot it. I'd like to see Boyer or 10 of the top guys shoot the BR for a couple of years.

If the 6br was more accurate than the ppc short range, the top 10 shooters WOULD be shooting it.

Rembo,

A good 6PPC load in a good rifle ought do well under an inch at 100 yards.

What is the twist rate of your barrel? In short range benchrest (100-300 yards) most of us doing group shooting are shooting the 6PPC in a slow twist (1 in 14") barrel with bullets that weigh 65-68 grains. And people typically are shooting custom bullets, not factory bullets.

If you have a 14 twist barrel, try some custom or close-to-custom bullets like the Berger in 65-68 grains. And try VihtaVuori N133 as suggested in one of the prior posts.

rembo :

The 70 gr. Noslere BT and 75 gr. VMAX will only be marginally stable with the 1 in 14 inch twist of the SAKO single shot BR rifles. Bullet stability will even be more of a problem if you are shooting in cold temperatures. Try shorter bullets. I have a SAKO 6mm PPC Hunter that does well with the 65 gr. VMAX, but my groups still start to open up a little in really cold weather. Three shot groups average less than 1/2 inch. My recipe for the 65 gr. VMAX load is SAKO Brass, Winchester Small Rifle Primers, 26.6 gr.s of Hogdon Benchmark. Cases are Necksized and bullets seated using Lee's Collet Neck Sizing Die and Dead Length Seating Die. Bullets are loaded @ 0.010 inches short of the jam length.

Good luck with the SAKO. Stick with it, you will have a shooter.

Nope. The 6PPC isn't the top choice because so many shoot it.....so many shoot it because it is the best. Don't you suppose benchrest shooters, a group of shooters who are never satisfied, have tried the 6BR? Of course they have and the PPC is still king out to 300 yards. I love the 6BR and the 30BR but the PPC is it.

Technically speaking, exactly what is so special about the PPC? I'm not asking about its accomplishments, but why it works so well.

happy harmony for bore/case capacity/size/efficiency etc.. same reason the 6.5/284 works so well for its intended purpose.....

What about the 6XC? Looks like it may replace the 6MMBR for long range.
