I just bought a Old style Vanquard, I like the trigger on it better then the V2. I did not like the 2 position saftey on mine so I removed the tang on the saftey lever that locks the bolt closed when the saftey is on. If I remember right the V2 has a 3 position safty. The price was right at 349.00, and I see Cabelas has them on sale for 339.00.
Thanks, Bob Too many calibers and not enough time for the working man to hunt with them all.

Apparently the series 2 vanguard changes (changes to the barelled action) will flow on to the howa. The 3 - pos safety is a positive step but the two-stage trigger seems like a backward step. It is adjustable down to 2.5 lb - but a adjustable, nornal trigger ( Timney style etc...) would be even better. But then again alot of folks would love them - they certainly look very snazzy. I could go with that too!!

Are there changes other than the trigger and safety? A timney fixes the trigger and gives you a three position safety.
Politicians and Diapers both need to be changed often, and for the same reason!

The question isn't who is going to let me; it's who is going to stop me.

I got a series 2 in 22-250 that will shoot! I am gonna sell it in a couple of weeks. It will shoot 50 grain v-max or 50gr ttsx in 3/4 no problem. The triggers are great out of the box.

Never could abide the old triggers though. That was always my biggest complaint. They were simply awful, and a lot of people told them that for a lot of years. I'm sure they knew it was something they HAD to change eventually... Anyway, I dropped Timneys in each of them and never looked back. (The Timney, by the way, upgraded from a two-position to three-position safety). Here they are (.257 Wby Mag with aftermarket stock and 300 WSM Sub-MOA).
If you're fixin' to put a hole in something, make it a hole to remember.

Cabela's in Hammond IN has them in 270Win & 30-06Spr for $339. Thay also have the Series 2 for $499. Which is the better deal/value? Should I get the older model or spend the extra $160 and get a Series 2?

I can't judge the series 2 as I haven't played with them yet. You might check out some original ones first and see if you can live with the trigger. If not, you'll spend money to upgrade, so you might save the hassle with a series 2. Wby used to ship the originals with a factory test target. If you found the right dealer, they might let you go through a few and cherry pick. I doubt that's the case today, but it never hurts to ask.
I assume those $339 guns you saw were with the old tupperware stock? It costs money to upgrade those, as well, so again, you may just be better off going with the series 2 -- unless you simply enjoy turning everything into a project, as rifle loonies often do.
It all depends on what you really need/want. If you can find an original that's a shooter (many were, even with the tupperware stock and less than great trigger) and it will do what you need to do without busting the budget, then by all means go for it. They're solid guns.
If you're fixin' to put a hole in something, make it a hole to remember.

The old model trigger is adjustable for wieght and creep, even though they say a gun smith must do it. It is like any other trigger I have had, just a nut locking a threaded slot screw shaft. One for creep and one for weight.
Thanks, Bob Too many calibers and not enough time for the working man to hunt with them all.

Yes, but they would only adjust so far... If I remember correctly, they may have changed that trigger at some point later in the life of the original rifles, but by that time I had gone to the Timneys and never looked back. The Timneys were a very popular modification. Basically a drop-in, although you did have to relieve a litle notch inside the stock to allow for the greater forward travel of the safety lever. Very simple install, and a world of difference afterwards.
If you're fixin' to put a hole in something, make it a hole to remember.
