I picked up an older model Remington 700 Bdl 243 varmint special. It has a 24" heavy barrel. Im not sure of the barrels twist rate. Im looking for a light factory varmint load that will shoot best in this rifle. Will be used mostly for coyote hunting. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kris

87 gr VMAX. 87 grain BTHP. Both made by Hornady, the VMAX has a great BC, and they're both pretty cheap. Have fun!

Nice. I always liked those. Usually, they're good shooters.

Here's a link to an article on handloading the .243 Win:

Back in my ground hog days I use to use a lot of 80 gr. hot cores and 80 rem sp. One thing I always like about the 243 is they are generally very accommodating and easy to get to shoot well. You have a beautiful rifle and one I always coveted but never acquired. I would try the bulk bullets from winchester and Remington and see how they do for you. If they shoot well then you're good to go and they will hammer a coyote. No use to spend more $$ than you have to. Oh I went back and looked at my old notes. I use to shoot the 75 gr hornady hp to about 3300 fps with H414 and ww 120 primers. It use to get me about 1/2 " in my old Remington adl . Might want to give that a try.

+1 on 87 gr VMax and 75 gr HP horn.

The former has the BC to reach out and touch someone while the latter just seems to shoot like nobody's business out of several rifles I load or have loaded for. They're certain death on varmints, too...

I have found the RP 80 gr PSPs to shoot alright but haven't run 'em through any live targets yet. Sure work nicely for steel, and if you keep your eyes open in the classifieds you can get 'em cheap. My buddy's Savage perked up w/ 46 gr IMR-4350, WIN LRM, and PPU brass. Guessing its doing around 3300 fps, though I haven't had a chance to chrono 'em yet.

It works miricles in my 6-250 so I gotta believe that Ramshot Hunter would be phenominal in this cartridge, too...

Good luck,

efw

PS- anybody have an idea as to what the ROT is in that rifle?
