I'm from San Diego, been here since '98. Hit me up with any questions if you'd like. It all depends what you're into and how much time you have on your hands. There is a ton to do here.
If you want to go surfing let me know.

I currently live in Escondido and work down in SD at the Naval Hospital, currently the zoo is good, the Midway Ship, the Gas Lamp distirct, in Escondido you have Stone Brewery aswell as several other breweries in San Diego, Port, Balahoo, ect. If you're in Downtown the convention center aswell as the port. Adam

The SD zoo was pretty good when I was there in the early 80s. (Geez, that seems so long ago. ) They had a few Przewalski's horse, which was pretty cool. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Przewalski%27s_Horse

Balboa Park: the Zoo, Air and Space Museum, there's also a small auto museum next to the A&S museum that's worth a look.
Lego Land, Sea World - especially if you have kids.
Wild Animal Park near Escondido
Lots of reservoirs containing big black bass. Several years back, someone caught a monster bass (probably a world record fish), then released it after taking photos. Can't remember which lake off-hand though.
La Jolla
California Missions: Mission San Diego, Mission San Luis Rey

Have dinner (and BEER) at Stone Brewery, just north of SD. Quite possibly one of the few things that djs and I could agree upon. Stone brews up some ridiculously good beer. And Stone IMNSHO doesn't brew the best beer in SD County. Do yourself a favor, and go to O'Briens ( http://obrienspub.net/ )to try out beers from ALL the local breweries, then if you find something you really like, head out to that particular brewery in the following evenings. My personal favorite: The Alpine Brewery ( http://www.alpinebeerco.com/ ) Pure Hoppiness and Exponential Hoppiness I can't wait to get sent back to SD.....

Watching whales blow ... blows. Twenty feet away? No no. That's considered harassment and is not the norm. Bingo. I too used to bang around TJ (was that a gasp I heard?) when in SoCal. Went in the 80s and 90s. I'll go back. I understand some folks' reluctance, but I've been in more than a couple third world shytholes. Usually I go around to food stalls and markets and eat until I about pop. I've been known to have a drink or two along with the food...

There's been a few times I had food in TJ ... I think I remember the seventy five cent beers and dollar tequila shots at The Long Bar. Somehow we always seemed to wind up at a bar with a Christmas theme called The Bambi Club. Their mascot was Rudolpf the Red Nosed Raindeer. Oops.

Go eat breakfast at a place called Kono's ( I believe that's the name of it). Its on the beach and it was great. LaJolla was pretty neat as well. SOB's wouldn't even let me in the Ferrari dealer there.

If you want to experience a classier establishment, I'd like to suggest Senor Frog's! P.S. Bring a knife.

Take the trolley tour. Can start at the USS Midway, take you around DT, Coronado, Balboa, and Old Town.
