Our Brittany spaniel came in from the sub zero cold a few days ago shivering quite a bit, despite only being out for a few minutes. I wrapped her up in a blanket and held on my lap for a while. Now she seems to think that under the blanket is where she needs to be when she comes in from the cold. We absolutely do not spoil our bird dog, just don't believe in it at all.

I'm calling the SPCA!

One of my GSP's refuses to sleep unless she is wrapped up like a subway sandwich inside a blanket. After dinner she will paw at my wife until she gets covered up. In the middle of the night if so much as one foot gets uncovered she will paw at my wifes side of the bed until she gets tucked back in. When my wife travels she doesn't bother me, she knows better.

You are so right. Our old Brittany passed last fall at 15 years old. This one, Willow, is 3 and was a rescue dog two years ago. She is about the sweetest dog I have ever known, and our old one was pretty sweet. Willow has been a great comfort dog for my wife and I. We lost her son (he was 40) last October after a five year battle with leukemia. Willow seems to know when my wife needs a dog in her lap and has been a great source of comfort for her when I am away at work. So if I spoil my bird dog a little, or a lot, I figure she has it coming.

My mini-doxie is laying on the top of my desk next to me right now. She is using my hunting cap as a bed and she is making me share my chocolate chip cookies with her.

If I behave well she lets me stay in the house at night....sigh!

Yep, never spoil your bird dog!

Even at work when I am finishing my sandwich and I'm down to that last little corner I find myself glancing around expecting Willow to be there waiting for her bite.

Yes she has me trained as did our old Brit. Our old Brittany came to us as a rescue dog, three years old and fully trained on birds. She trained me how to hunt over a pointing dog. Then she trained me to make room for her on the bed and to save a corner of my sandwich for her and so on and so on until I was a fully trained dog servant.

Ah, living the life!

My dog's weren't allowed on furniture, with the exception of thunderstorms (hey, I've a heart....) But once Sandy discovered beds, warm electric blanket and all, during a winter storm, she refuses to be evicted. And given her hardscrabble life before being rescued, I don't force the issue.

Now it's a nightly routine. Last night I went to bed, found her UNDER the blankets, my side of the bed, with head on the pillow.

No dogs on furniture... whatcha gonna do?

Yessir he's a German Wirehaired Pointer. My other one is a German bred Drathaar.Ended up with a slick but who cares.

our dogs come in and sit in front of the cabinet that has the rawhide sticks in it. Naturally, my wife dutifully gets each dog a rawhide. I always praise her for being so well trained!
