I moved to an area where bobcat trapping is legal. I caught my first one this morning, and the best part is that it was a set specifically made for a bobcat. The Iowa quota will probably be full by the end of the week, so I got it in the nick of time. I am going to get it tanned and hang it on the wall by my first otter.

Congrats! Glad you get to keep it. I tan and keep mine also. That same location will probably work again.

Location- Seen any bobs, tracks or scat? I make a small dirthole at the base of a small tree. I block it off with brush, limbs etc. Only one way to approach the hole. It's called a cubby. I like to use chicken or turkey bones for bait. A shot of fox urine(attracts everything) and some kind of call lure on a strip of linen hanging from a limb nearby. Can't guarantee you won't catch a possum, coon ,fox first.Good Luck! I use Derrick's brand bobcat lures. He's in N.Mexico.

I was walking a dry creekbed while bowhunting and thought, this looks just like where they make bobcat sets in fur, fish and game.I went about twenty feet and saw cat scat and I decided I would set there when the season opened. There were a couple other people hunting the property, and one with not the best reputation, so I hade to make my set a little subdued. I made a scent post set right where I found the scat. I used fox urine on a piece of drift wood, with a lure called voodoo underneath the wood. I also had a mallard wing hanging from a limb with fishing line, about 30 feet away. It just fluttered in the wind. Two days before I caught it, I had a cat step on the edge of my trap, but missed the pan. I adjusted my trap a couple of inches farther away and got her. The trap I used was a Montana number three, laminated and offset and I should have double staked, but I didn't and got lucky. I will double stake from now on. I am far from being an expert, but I hope this helps.

Congrats on the cat! Cats are my main target. Dry washes/creek beds, well used game trails and vehicle trails are money when it comes to trapping cats. As for lures, there are a ton of good lures and baits. Some of my favorite lures are Gusto, Steppenwolfe I and II, Violator 7, GH II, Voo Doo, and pros Choice. As for bait I like Hiawatha Valley, Bushwacker, and a couple of my own I call Bad Beaver and Skank Butter.

Im gonna post some stuff lures later.
