I'm heading out for Bison hunt next week, and am still up in the air as too rifle choice this time around. I believe any of calibers below will get the job done, and have killed bison before with a .444 Marlin. However, this time I thought I would try something different. The shot can be taken from as far as 200 yds, but realistically speaking, 100 yds would be far more likely.
So, should I use an old 1886 45-70 with 405 gr hand cast bullets, a 7 mag using 175 NP, perhaps my beat up, old .338 win mag with 250 NP. Or, should I stick to the plain Jane, tried & true .270, .280, or 30-06, all with heavy for caliber bullets?
Is seems to me, one could just grab one out of the safe, and be satisfied that it would get the job done with ease, but I would like to hear your opinions.
Respects,
Richard

Afraid I won't be aiming for the "brain pan", but suspect the "whatever" part, might just be good enough!

I'm a big fan of the '86 myself. It would be hard to leave that one behind. That being said, I'm hoping to take a bison next fall, and I'm tempted to use my 375 JDJ handgun for that one. I may also bring my scoped 375 H&H bolt gun, and make up my mind once I'm there.

Out of the choices listed, the '86 in 45-70 would be my first choice. But I really like 45-70s.

The 1886 would make for better photos. That's what I'd take if 'twere me.

Well, it seems like the 86 would be a good choice, so it will be carried the first couple of days. If the buff are keeping their distance I think the back up might be a .338 win.
