With a heavy heart I come to the campfire today to remember my good frined, neighbor, and hunting partner, Dick. Dick's been fighting the scourge of cancer for many years now, and I just was informed by our neighbor that his valiant and dignified fight has just ended. Dick was the kind of guy anyone would welcome at deer camp. A soft spoken, gentle giant, Dick was the consumate hunter, rifleman, and friend. His presence will be sorely missed at deer camp this year, and for years to come. If you've read my posts before, you've seen my postings in memory of all the hunting groups that lost a member since the last deer season. Now it's our turn to go through this process once again. Dick's son Barry will be bringing his son with us for the first time this year, continuing the family tradition. It's a darn shame that TJ's first year in deer camp will be spent going through the emotions of losing his Grandfather. Time moves on. Best wishes to all the other groups going through this too. Just remember that your hunting partner has gone on to a far better place, where the hills aren't so steep, there's always a fresh tracking snow on the ground, and all the bucks are shooters. Farewell good friend. You will be missed.

I'm sorry for your loss. It sounds like he was a great guy.

Dick only hunted with us for a couple years. His group lost access to their spot by Detroit Lakes due to a zoning issue. His cancer was pretty far along by the time he joined us, but he made it through 2 more deer seasons. Dick was a very accomplished hunter, and many times when I'd be out in the garage cutting up a deer, I'd look across and see him and his son Barry doing the same. They were the "guns" of their group-many times helping others from their group fill their tags. Dick and his wife both died of cancer. It just took him a couple years longer to succumb to it. They were high school sweethearts from southwestern Minnesota, and their entire group of classmates/friends has been hit by cancer. Asbestos in their school? Something in the ground or water? Who knows? It's a rotten thing to go through. I watched my mother rot away from the cancer. There was no doubt where hers came from-she smoked her whole life-right up until the last few months of her life. Her and my dad both smoked heavily, and I've always been bitter that I run almost as good a chance of dying from their second-hand smoke, as they did from actually doing the smoking. Dick's cancer came from something else-he was not a smoker. The world will be a much better place when we find a cure for this terrible disease.

Your friend has gone to a better place than he was at the moment, for sure.
My condolances on his passing, but remember, he hasn't left forever.

He will always be with you in spirit, and is just scouting out some new ground for when you meet again...

I lost all my deer hunting buddies over a few years, but the one that went with cancer was the hardest for me to take. Your story brings back a lot of memories. Best of luck.

I know where you're coming from as we lost an ex-member of our past Elk Camps out on the Hoh River when we hunted out in the Clearwater Unit just this last weekend from a Brain Anerium (sp), he's at piece now as he is with his wife and his children, who all on before him.

It sounds like he made his mark and made a good one. Its always sad to loose a good friend/hunting partner, but he will live on forever in your good memories of him. Sorry for your loss.

The acting president of our hunting club has terminal cancer and is a very impressive man. He's on borrowe time(to put it bluntly and sadly) and I don't look forward to the inevitable.

I lost a Grandfather to cancer and know what the dealings are. I am deeply sorry for your loss. May the Good Lord bless this man and his family.

The hardest was my father-in-law and brother. Both died from cancer. I will NEVER stop hunting. Whenever I enter the woods I bring with me their memories. That way, they never die. I try always to have something from my father, father-in-law, and brother with me when I hunt. Be strong and continue.
