Recently I aquired a new to me / ol' Smith & Wesson revolver.
It is a J-frame, model 51, .22 WMR, 3 1/2" barrel, adj. sights, square butt, with serial# M140XX.
Does anyone out there have a S&W reference book that can tell me when this revolver was made?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

69 to 71 is as close as the book narrows it down but I'd guess 70 as it's in the middle of the range.

RufusG, Thanks for your help with the "birthdate" (year) for my S&W model 51.
Safariman, Yes, it is a very cool little gun! Can't wait to get it sighted in and put it to use in the field!! I expect it to be loud as you mentioned, I've had a few Ruger Single-Six convertibles in the past, using the .22 mag cylinder sure made a loud "crack" compared to the .22lr.
