I inherited a 1963 Model 70 in .225 cal. in excellent condition.

I'm a traditional bowhunter and really have no use for this gun.
I have a Model 70 .270 that I use for my occasional gun hunt.

Plus I don't reload which is a requirement for the .225 since ammo is impossible to find (I have 2 boxes of shells and about 200 pieces of brass).

I would prefer to sell this gun so my 4 daughters don't have to deal with it some day. Is this a sell-able rifle? I'm not looking to hit the jackpot but only a fair deal for buyer and seller.

I've checked GunsAmerica and gunbroker and found in this caliber but later models.

Thanks

The .225 would be 1964 or later, there were none of them made pre-64. Do you have any pictures of it?

If you have a 1963 Model 70 chambered for the .225 Winchester then it has been rebarreled. The .225 WIN was introduced in the Post-64 Model 70 in 1965 and was last offered as a factory chambering in the Model 70 in 1971. Are you sure of the date of manufacture of your Model 70? If it is a 1963 built pre-64 M70 with a new barrel, then the gun is worth whatever you can get for it and that will depend on who rebarreled it and what kind of job they did.

Thanks for the correction.

No rebarreling. Dad bought it new. (he kept a list)

I was just looking at a Winchester serial number chart I found online for Model 70's and trusted it as accurate.

I'll get some photos up.

The stock style is the first impressed style (64 & 65), without the serial number I would say you have a first year .225 WIN (1965), standard barrel. Your pictures are dark, but if the gun is as pristine as it appears to be I would guess right around $1000.00. The .225 WIN is worth about double what a similar condition rifle in .270 WIN, .30-06 SPRG, etc., is worth. About 6K total mfg in the .225 WIN from 65 - 71.

I would be interested in buying it, but not for $1,000.00. If you can't get a collector price for it, give me a PM.

I had a couple of .225's way back when, and they were good shooters.

Winchester 101, "never say never". Here is a factory prototype 225 Winchester made in the early 60's for developing and accuracy testing the then new 225 cartridge. I purchased this rifle some 20 years ago from a former Winchester executive who had just retired after nearly 50 years of service. It has the late Stainless Steel barrel in the Varmint/Target contour that is 26" long. Notice markings on bolt, and nice stencil job on stock. This is just the way it came to me. It's obviously not a production piece, but a very interesting piece of Winchester history non the less.

I'm considering keeping it but he left some other collector-worthy guns that are more practical for me to keep like this 25-20:

Post '64 push feed M-70's aren't that valuable, although pretty good shooters, generally.

1000 seems steep to me, with the 2 boxes of shells and the 200 pieces of brass you may be able to fetch $650-700. if you price that gun at $1000 it will sit for months.

FWIW, yours is a 64 or later. I can see from your pics that the serial # is 72x,xxx. The Mod 70 I inherited from my father is 719,xxx and is a 64.

I see M70s in 225 every now and then, but not often, plus
an occasional Savage M340.
