Not to nit pick!!

What distinction is there for you between the 350RM & 35 W?

Guns themselves?

Bullets used?

? ?

Personal whim? I carry whatever gun I'm in the mood to hunt.
Just curious, no criticism.

I also have a real nice 358 Win that would also work just fine...just a 35 cal rifle loony, I guess.

No real rationale. My 350 Rem mag is a 22" bolt and I have it dialed in for 250 yards, so it's more for open meadows. My 375 Ruger is a 20" Alaskan and more of a timber gun. My 35 Whelen pump is a 22" and is a new acquisition...so I just want to use it. I have it set up w/ a red dot, so it will also be shorter range.

Seems most of the area I hunt is getting overgrown and any these rifles will work well. Of course, a guy has to have a backup rifle in case one gets dropped and boogered up. And I need another for my son, so 4 rifles go to camp.

And, of course, I have to develop a load for each rifle...what a burden.

Same as always....Remington 700 in .338 Win. Mag. Probably go with my favorite Swift A-Frame 250 grain bullets, but have been experimenting with the same bullet in a 225 grain weight. Might end up using the lighter bullet.

Lord willing I get to go, Savage 99C .358 winchester shooting 225gr sierras or maybe partitions, not sure which. At the ranges I'll be hunting I doubt it would make much of a difference. Hunting the San Juans in Colorado and most of the hunting I've done there is in timber so the shots shouldn't ever get over 200yds maybe 300. And to be honest that's really about my range limit anyway. Just got this gun and really looking forward to putting some loads together for it this summer.

God Bless,

MM

That depends on what tag I wind up with. There are 2 choices and I'm not really thrilled with my current rifles for either. I have a modestly adequate short range rifle and a modestly adequate long range rifle, but nothing in the middle to cover the bulk of what I'm most likely to run into.

Your .338 choice is one of my favorites and may be my selection. I've had 4 so far, still tooled up to load for it, dies brass bullets etc. I could say the same for .375, too, so it's not a slam dunk for either.

On the other hand, if I wind up with the more local tag, I may pass on a new rifle and get a new handgun. I want to kill and elk with a handgun and this could be my year to pursue that more seriously.

We'll see ...

If my hunting buddy and I are lucky enough to draw a tag It'll be

-M700 Classic in 35 Whelen 225gr Sierra as primary
-M700 Mt rifle in .280 140gr Partition as back up

or if we get our 3rd choice hunt

Thompson/Center Triumph

can't wait till draw results are out!!

My Jan 2012 elk rifle was a .270. Worked fine with 130 Hornadys a below max load of 4831 at 350'ish yards.

Similar here... late November cow elk hunt was the same 270 with 150 NBT at 2,900.

Primary will be my push feed Model 70, 300 Win Mag (66 Model)Nosler 180's.

Backup is my Model 700, 7mm STW, Nosler 175's

Both rifles sport composite stocks, custom triggers, and 3.5 X 10 Leupold BDC reticle scopes. I hunt mountains.

May bow hunt in Western Washington early season.
